I'm from Poland, lived here for 18 years. My parents are polish too, and my mom keeps spewing these incredably ridiculous old wives tales. My favorite so far is that you need an odd number of BM.
any other superstitions that make people laugh, lets share the humor.

Re: Superstitions and old wives tales
Then there's the one that if you take your e-ring or wedding ring, string it on a strand of your own hair and hold it over your left hand with your right hand you can find out how many kids you will have and what gender they will be. If it swings back and forth it will be a boy, in circles a girl. you place it down on you hand between each time.
I did it just to humor my mom, and it came out a boy, a girl and a boy.

How does that tell you how many you'll have? Wont it keep going as many times as you do it?

It won't move at all if you're not going to have any more. That's why you put it down on your left hand between each time. On the fourth time I picked it up it just hung there.

Rosaries in your window the week before the wedding will ward off rain... I heard that from my DOC.
Well I did that (well I heard if you put a picture of the Virgin Mary, so I did that) I'd figured what the heck it can't hurt -- and it worked

I thought it was the Virgin Mary in the window 8 days before the wedding? (I am SO putting on in the window.. I am getting married 4/29.. so I am borderline bad weather)

Rain on your wedding day is good luck and a sign of a blessed marriage (I was praying for rain and was soooo happy when it started pouring! )
Pearls bring tears to the eyes...girls shouldn't wear pearls.
If rain is so good what about a blizzard?
I think it's the same. You were blessed!
But I have to say, I won't wear pearls!!

You may not have that many children (it counts all pregnancies even if not carried to full term.... early miscarriage, etc.)

I got boy, boy, girl, and then it stopped! OK I don't really want that many kids, but cool none-the-less.

It's your belly if you're pregnant, but your hand if you're not.

I have never heard this before! It actually freaks me out. I am afraid to do it in case nothing happens! My SIL saw a palm reader for fun on their honeymoon. The woman told her she wouldn't have any children! They do have one now, but it really upset her.

Re: Superstitions and old wives tales
I'm not usually superstitious, but FH made a sample of our CD favor. We had originally chosen 12 songs, but he added the intro. I didn't feel comfortable with the number of tracks, so I asked him to add one more song. He understood. So weird how people get freaked out by a number, but I'm not taking any chances!

Honestly, I would never do a palm reader. My great grand-mother did it one day as a joke. The old lady told her she was going to lose a man very close and dear to her in a few days. She thought she was talking about my great grand-father who had cancer. 3 days after the 'session', one of her sons died. He was 22 years old but got accidentally shot by one of his friends. We don't do palm reading in my family.
