I know that we're all New York brides (mostly) but did anyone ever live on the west coast or attend a bridal shower of someone on the west coast? The girl who gave away the date of my 'surprise shower' said that all the ones she's ever been to weren't a surprise and that surprise bridal showers are 'strictly a new york thing'. I've been to bridal (and baby) showers in pa and nj which were surprises, and was curious as to whether bridal showers aren't surprises in the west coast states.

I went to a baby shower in Indiana. She knew about the shower but she didn't know I was coming.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
I've been to some in the South that were surprise showers. The ones I went to in the midwest weren't surprise because there were so many people travelling in from out of town they told the bride since she wanted to spend time with everyone.
ETA: I was invited to a surprise one in NH as well.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
I grew up outside of Los Angeles, and I only went to two showers out there, but neither one were surprises. Honestly, I never heard of it being a surprise until I came to New York, too.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
I'm from NY but my SIL is from Texas & she planned her entire wedding/baby shower. She said too that only in NY is it a 'surprise' thing.

Wow this is so interesting. I was born and raised in NY and I always assumed that all showers were surprised unless requested by the bride. Never new it was a NY or East Coast.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
I've been to 2 bridal showers in pa (both were surprises) as in brides didn't know they were even having them. One i went to in NJ was a baby shower, and it was a surprise although mom to be suspected something was going on. Sounds so much more exciting when it's a surprise. If I had to throw one for myself, I wouldnt, besides the fact it would be extremely awkward ('come give me gifts'). Fiance & I are already planning the wedding and believe me, that's enough party throwing to last me a lifetime.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
I personally don't see the reasoning behind it being a surprise to begin with. We all know as brides, there is going to be a bridal shower at some point.
Honestly, I was so stressed out the last couple of months leading up to the wedding (partly because we were moving into our new house at the height of all the wedding planning), that I knew I couldn't handle it being a surprised and I worked out the date with my sisters and mother.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
Actually, I would have loved to be surprised, mainly for the very same reasons: because I have been stressed with the wedding, moving, the financial aspect of everything, etc. and would have very much enjoyed the respite of expecting something ordinary and being reminded how much people care about me to go through the trouble of making an otherwise ordinary day very special for me. A little unexpected fun goes a long way, and helps you remember that wedding planning isn't just about dollars and cents, who sits where, and the blood thirsty vendors that are out to undercut one another.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
I have to clarify that at least the showers I went to in Los Angeles, it wasn't a surprise, but the bride still didn't plan it. The bridesmaids and/or families planned the showers. The bride simply knew what date it was.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
I think it is just a NY thing too. I don't want mine to be a surprise...makes it so much harder on the BP to get you there, also wastes a lot of people's time if you ask me - sitting around and waiting for the bride to get there.

I agree fully. My MOH asked me when I wanted mine...she & the bp are planning it though

Re: Surprise bridal showers
I'm orginally from western NY, and bridal and baby showers were known, not surprises. I found that it's a downstate thing - along with a lot of other things - when I moved down here!
I'm aware of my bridal shower date and who is being invited and who is throwing it because I was asked.

Re: Surprise bridal showers
Grew up and got married in NY---been to about 30 weddings since graduating college---only surprise showers (wedding or baby) have been in New York.
ETA: My NY shower wasn't a surprise since they had to pick a weekend they knew I'd be in town..it was so much easier for everyone !
