Re: SWR : past engagements
I didnt have one, but my good friend did. She got out and started dating right away. She called off her wedding in 2008 and has dated a bunch of guys since but nothing too serious.

A friend of mine did too. She started dating about a year and a half later and that relationship is now very serious.

Re: SWR : past engagements
I was engaged a couple of years ago and after the broken engagement I was sooo upset....but I waited a couple of months and signed up for EHarmony and ended up meeting the love of my life...the man I will marry in July...we dated a little over 2 years now and we are living together......every thing happens for a reason and all works out for the best.....don't think you have to have a set time before you start dating again...when you are ready, you will know....just let your heart mend before jumping into any thing. I wish you all of the best....hang in there and if you need any advice or some one to talk to, feel free to FM me....

i'm thinking 5 years is a bit extreme! only you can know what is the right time for you to move on. maybe they are just saying that because you are 'young'?

Re: SWR : past engagements
I was engaged during college. I met him in my sophomore year of college (SUNY) and we basically were extremely physically attracted to one another. He was really my 'first' real romantic relationship. I dated in high school but never was serious w. any 1 guy. We got engaged when I came back from my Junior summer abroad semester, the ring, the bended knee, the whole 9 yards.
My family was thrilled. We moved in together my senior year of college and everything seemed ok until after college graduation when everything started to fall apart I started law school and our relationship became strained (he was a year younger than me). Turned out he befriended a female classmate in his Comp Sci class and before I knew it, they were spending almost every minute together. I didn't even know until I surprised him one weekend when I drove up to visit him.
Well fast forward to a year and a half later, many arguments and we called the engagement off. It was a good thing because I later discovered he was cheating on me the whole time. His family wasn't crazy about mine -the entire thing was a farce because his parents were Jewish and expected me to convert to Judaism (my ex-fiancee said he didnt care about religion). Bunch of baloney. He was engaged a year later to the woman he cheated on me with and had the nerve to invite my best friend to his wedding.
Took me several years to heal. Met current FH when I was 31 years old..So for me, it took me about 8 years to finally find Mr. Right. FH is everything I could hope for and more...and I feel a LOT more wiser and smarter for not getting married at the age of 23/24 to that loser I knew in undergrad!!!

5 years is ridiculous. Any time limit people suggest is ridiculous. you need to do what's right for YOU and only you will know when that is! It could be a month from now, who knows.

Re: SWR : past engagements
I was in a really serious relationship...no engagement, but 3+ years invested.
We were jerks to each other, but we were young (dated from when I was 19 - 23).
He didn't want to commit.
One night, I was like 'take me to Tower Records' and I bought a shytload of CDs. Went back to my apartment with him and put on Taxi Driver. Neither of us had ever seen it before. Sitting on the couch, I realized that while I was sitting next to him, I could've been sitting next to some random person on the subway. That's how unaffected I was by him at that point. So I said (completely out of the blue)...'yeah, this 'you and me' thing...it's not really working anymore...I'm kinda done...but I know you never saw 'Taxi Driver' so if you want to stay until it's over, that's cool.'
And he stayed until it was over
And I fkn PARTIED girl...like dirty stay-out partying, crazy shyt, waking up on a rock in Central Park and shyt...and about a month and a half later, FH and I met up again (we were acquaintances in college) and have been together ever since.
There's really no timeframe. Whatever's right for you. People grieve in different ways, and IMO when a relationship ends, you still end up grieving it in some way.
Even if that means waking up on a rock in Central Park.

Re: SWR : past engagements
i called off my engagement August 2006. I signed up with online dating right after the new year (1/07). Dated a bunch of different people plus a few blind dates; nothing serious really. Started dating FH in July 2008.
i don't think there is a specific time or 'due diligence' to wait to start dating again. its obviously whenever you feel ready. as a point of reference to our break-up date above, my ex-FH was engaged AGAIN by Dec 2006... so technically, you might be back on here again with a new FH come July 2010!

i definitely think waking up on a rock in central park would do me some good

Was not seriously engaged before but we said we were getting married...had been together 4+ years...then one day I knew I couldn't go through with marriage..made him move out
Went out a few times with friends and was introduced to FH (this was about 7+ months later) and now we are engaged
I don't think there is any time frame..and usually when you are not looking (the one will find you)

I started talking to DH 4 months to the day after me and my ex broke up. It was the best thing ever that it happened. DH is my everything and I do not know where I would be without him.

ITA...You cant put a time limit on this..Its when your ready, its when HE is ready. Timing for both the guy and the girl have to be just right.
When I met FH, I had just ended a relationship that wasn't going anywhere..I signed up on Match, Plenty of Fish, eHarmony, you name it - just to meet people to hang out with on weekends. FH didn't even register on my radar as Boyfriend material until 1 month after we met...I really didn't think I would get married honestly, after I turned 30 my entire attitude was like 'acck just have fun, who cares. life is short...'...

Re: SWR : past engagements
5 years?!?!?! Mine was like 3 months! I broke up with my ex and 3 months later I met FH. My ex was really crappy and treated me like crap so it was pretty easy to get over him. The hard part was letting him go to begin with. Once I broke it off I thought to myself why I didn't break up with him YEARS ago?!?!?!

I wasn't engaged but living with an ex-bf for a year. I was looking to date a million guys after we broke up but I ended up meeting FH two weekends after I moved out of ex's apartment. I wasn't one to jump into a new relationship but we just fit so perfectly so I didn't care how recent it was.
I say relax, have fun, but don't deny yourself of happiness if you find someone quickly. There is no minimum time you need to be single!
