Re: SWR : past engagements
We were not engaged, but I was seriously involved with a guy for about 3 years...we were living together and it just wasn't working at all. I broke it off with him and it was a really terrible, hard breakup...we were at the point where it was either get married or break up...I chose 'break up'...he was kinda on the other side of that one.
I went crazy and casually dated like 2-3 guys at once...just decided to have fun and see where life took me, didn't want anything serious...4 months later I started talking to FH online...a month and a half after that we met for the first time and I was totally smitten.
It can really happen at any time, and mostly when you least expect it. Just do what makes you happy and don't worry about when the actual right one will come along.

Re: SWR : past engagements
I wasn't engaged, but I was living with someone for about a year, when I realized I just did not want to be in that relationship. One night, we were driving, looking for a place to go for dinner, and I was just like, let's end it, I'm done. He turned around, took his CD's out of his car, and we made plans to exchange the rest of our stuff. It was hard, and we continued to see each other for about a month and a half after that, until I realized I couldn't continue to put myself through this and that I had to make a decision. So I ended it for good.
About a year and a half later, I met FH on Facebook, we had gone to college together, and are pretty sure we met sometime in the past, but were probably both too drunk to remember it. About 2 months after meeting FH, I knew he was the one.
There is no time limit. You will know when you are ready and when it is right. Until then, just try to have fun.

I started dating again pretty much right away. I got into a serious relationship about 3 months later and dated that guy for two years before breaking it off I met FH about 3 or 4 months after that.

5 years is ridiculous. Any time limit people suggest is ridiculous. you need to do what's right for YOU and only you will know when that is! It could be a month from now, who knows.
I totally agree. If you are someone who can learn from past mistakes then there is no reason to wait to start dating again.

wasn't engaged but talking about it when he got cold feet...I broke up with him..went to a wedding as a BM a week later and met H
And he was divorced a year!!!
I say get right back on there..but don;t get serious first...have some time to heal..have fun.
5 years is way too long though!
how old are you if you dont mind me asking?

I wasn't engaged but living with an ex-bf for a year. I was looking to date a million guys after we broke up but I ended up meeting FH two weekends after I moved out of ex's apartment. I wasn't one to jump into a new relationship but we just fit so perfectly so I didn't care how recent it was.
I say relax, have fun, but don't deny yourself of happiness if you find someone quickly. There is no minimum time you need to be single!
ITA! I broke up with a boyfriend of years. We weren't engaged, but we were together on and off since I was 17/18 until 24. It was over for a looooong time before we finally broke up. I had grieved over the relationship long before we officially ended. Plus, towards the end it was just bad...up and down..breakup/makeup type shiiiiit.
Well, I signed up onto Match.com right away. I really didn't even want to date people since we just broke up, but wanted to chat with people or something. Who knows what I wanted! I was not expecting ANYTHING though. Well, started talking to FH right away and knew I had to MEET him. It just felt sooo right. We met a few weeks after, and we have not been apart since.
So, yes it was VERY quick after my breakout, but it was the right thing and perfect timing for us.
Take time to heal, but you don't need 5 years. Dont deny yourself if something feels right because you're thinking of a timeline for yourself.
You will find the right guy when the timing is right.

ok i think i'm going against the grain here....but IMO i think you always need one rebound relationship....nothing serious, just a good time to help get past the yucky lingering emotions!
and i totally agree w everyone else, it will happen when ur ready. and EVERYTHING happens for a reason....(that's the gospel according to tracey, anyway)
lots of luck hun. sending good energy ur way!

OMG... i dated a guy for 3-4 years (20-24)... and i was CRAZY in love... like real crazy.... lol
we lived together and now looking back i can def say that i settled... i didnt give myself the opportunity to ask for more, or ask for waht i deserve.
anyway, we werent engaged but we were very serious.
we broke up and he got married about 6 months later (he had been cheating on me)
at first i was extremely heart broken to the point where i looked sick... (that lasted abt 1 month) then i went on a huge partying binge (happy hr, thurs-sun) that was a lot of fun but very $$$ lol...(that lasted less than a year)
i decided to stop living life that way and made decisions for ME, i started grad school, moved into my own apt, got a great job (where i met fh), bought my own furniture, renovated my apt, bought a car,.... i did SO much for ME ...
FH and i met and were just friends for over a year... he was my best guy friend, and now my fh
everythign happens for a reason, cliche but true...its now time for you to take care of yourself and yes you will go through many emotions...but at the end it will all work itself out
have lots of faith in yourself

it's all about what you're comfortable with. if you're ready now, you're ready now and anyone that loves you should support that. if you're not ready for months or years, then they should support that too.
fh has a pretty cute friend that's graduating from college (he's 25 tho haha, not 22) and coming to live with us for the summer he's already got a high payin job in the city too

I didnt have a broken engagement- but I did have a broken marriage. I started dating about 4 months after i left my ex. People told me it was too quick but I hadnt loved my ex for a long time and I wanted to get back out there. It was never anything serious just went out and had fun. It was about 3 years before I met FH and got serious with him. You do whats right for you. Ddont listen to those people that say 5 years. I know people who have lost a spouse to death and havent waited that long to date.

Re: SWR : past engagements
FH lived with a girl for 3+ yrs even moved back to NY to be with her. in Feb 08 she packed up her shyt while he was at work and left (yup he came home to find a note and most of the stuff gone ).
He signed up for JDate about 4-5 months later and met ME in Aug 08 (about less than a month of being on there) and got engaged exactly a yr after she left to ME!
Everything happens for a reason as cliche as that sounds.
I agree with everyone, nobody other than u can tell u how long or how at all ur supposed to handle this. do whatever feels right for u.

Re: SWR : past engagements
one of my best friends wedding was called off 3 weeks before her wedding. The guy completely walked out and never looked back.. (HATE HIM)she was devastated and it took a couple months to deal with the hurt and she went on dates i would say right away maybe a couple of months later.. some doozies ofcourse, but it got her mind off of that A-hole..it took a good year I would say for her to fully move on from him.. and she wound up finding a great guy a year ago!! I dont think there is a real timeline on when is the right time after a broken engagement to meet someone. I think if it happens, it happens, might be right away might take time. go at your own pace and you will find someone worth the while!! PROMISE!!!!

I don't think there is a right answer here. My personal feeling is that you just got out of a committed relationship and you should just go have fun! Who cares if people think its too soon, but you should just let loose and have a good time.

Re: SWR : past engagements
1 - friend called off engagement last year around 4th of july, was dating someone new within weeks. she is still dating him now and things are going really well... not engagement talk that i know of, but its pretty serious.
2 - i dated someone for 6.5 years and realized he was the biggest loser and the last few months i could not even stomach being near him. i broke up with him on a saturday, the next day i gave my number to someone new (some one i already knew and knew was itnerested in me and i was interested in). we went out that friday, only dated for 6 or so months, but it made it clear what i was looking for

Re: SWR : past engagements
You date sweetie when you are ready if its today, tomorrow or a year from now.
I personally was not engaged but almost close to being engaged to my ex before FH. We dated for over 2 years and then one day after I came back from a horrible vacation with him where we were fighing ect I just asked my self W T F am I with this loser? I wound up waiting for a good time to break up with him becasue he was PSYCHO obsessed with me and while I was preparing myself to dump him I signed up on Singlesnet.com where like a week after I broke up with him I started to talk to FH, met him a month later and we have been inspreatable ever since.
You are such a beautiful and strong woman and you will def find that special someone whenever you are ready.
