Forest hills, bayside, astoria, kew gardens (these rents will probably be the most expensive)
whitestone is nice, but mainly residential homes
upcoming areas are long island city, jackson heights is really improving
woodside, sunnyside, elmhurst , maspeth , middle village areas are also decent areas.

I agree about Forest Hills. Used to live there myself. Love the tudor style homes and Austin St.
Here are some more:
Rego Park (cheaper than FH but next to it)
Astoria (lotsa great restaurants, esp. Greek)
Kew Gardens
Long Island City (up and coming)

We live in Astoria, there are lots of young people around here. Its a great neighborhood, esp. upper ditmars.
and the parking is a lot better than in forest hills, there aren't so many big apartment buildings like there. We also looked in Forest Hills, and that was one of our deciding factors.

fh grew up in Middle Village, and we are there quite often, still a very, very nice area...maspeth, is nice too

Definitely Astoria ive lived most of my life and theres always something to do from the cafes to the restaurants and being so close to the city its perfect
