My family wants to throw a 'party' for me over the summer to recognize the pending birth of my son (I have 2 daughters, so everyone is sooo excited that we will have a boy in the family). I have stressed that I don't want a shower since this is my 3rd child, and I have stressed that if they throw a party it should be made clear 'NO PRESENTS!', it's just a 'get-to-gether'. I feel al little awkward about this, is it tacky? Be honest! I feel people will feel inclinced to buy stuff since it is my 1st son, but I TRULY don't want them to bring ANYTHING.

Re: tacky to have a baby 'party' for 3rd child?
I think it is becoming more common now to have more than 1 shower. Did you have a 2nd shower with the birth of your 2nd daughter? How far apart in age is your 2nd daughter to your 3rd child?
Honestly, my aunt is having a small lunch with just my immediate family, only like 15 women, for my cousins 3rd baby. Its been 3 years since her last baby. If your close to the family, they will be giving you gifts when the baby is born anyway...you can say NO GIFTS but you know someone is going to show up with a gift.
What if it is just a BBQ and don't tell anyone it is to recognize the pending birth of your son?
Good Luck! Let us know how it turns out.

I agree with the above.
Just be clear to your family what you do and don't want.

Re: tacky to have a baby 'party' for 3rd child?
I think it's a great idea to keep it a 'barbeque', but my family is at least 60 people (my family is very close to even my 2nd and 3rd cousins) and my Mom wants to invite everyone since everyone is so excited. I doubt my family of big mouths could keep it quiet what it is REALLY for, but maybe we could give it a try. My girls are 3 years apart, my Mom threw a 2nd shower for me with just the ladies from our immediate families, it was a brunch with about 10 ladies, but this will be HUGE! I think it's a great idea I know my family would not blink an eye about even a 3rd baby shower with gifts and the whole 'sha-bang' since they are all about parties, family get togethers and babies, so I guess it's just my own feelings. I guess I should just enjoy it!

Re: tacky to have a baby 'party' for 3rd child?
Our family enjoys a good party too, just about anything is cause for celebration.
BUT, personally I would not want to have a third 'baby party' (or second). I have never gone to a 'No Presents' function and not brought a gift. I don't give gifts because the person wants them or not, I just like to give gifts. But thats just me, I just wouldn't count on people not bringing them.
I would probably be more inclined to have a party celebrating the baby's arrival rather than the pending birth.

Re: tacky to have a baby 'party' for 3rd child?
I'm going through the same thing, (all though mine is supposed to be a surprise. I found invitations in my FH drawer when I was putting his clothes away, he really needs a better hiding spot) I have told him and the others that are throwing my shower that I do not want nor do I need one. But they went ahead and planned it anyway. This is baby #4 for me and I don't see the point. I only need Misc. things that we can afford. IMO... A baby shower is to help first time parents with the things they will need for the baby. If they would like to get me or the baby a little something that would be fine. I just don't see the point to throw a party, exspecialy since I don't want one. I posted a question about this on the NWR board, 'To Go or Not To Go?'Everyone that replied said I should go and not let this baby be left out. Well let us know what happens.

Your family sounds so sweet! I say let them throw you a party and enjoy it! It sounds like they are looking at your pregnancy/new baby as a great reason to get together and have fun. Not tacky at all. It would be tacky if you wanted to organize one for yourself.

We had a diaper and wipes party for my girlfriend when she had her 3rd baby. I say let your family throw you the party, especially if they enjoy it!
