talking

how old were ur kids when they started talking? I have a niece is is going to be 2 in a few weeks and has really yet to start talking. I keep telling my SIL to check it out but she refuses to do something. If I show her this and she sees everyones response maybe she will have second thoughts. TIA

Re: talking

My son started talking by 1 but my nephew is the same age as Luke, now 21 months, and still says about 6 words. It depends on the child. 2 years is when they consider it to be a late bloomer with talking. I think you can get them evaluated earlier...but you cant make the parents do it. If your niece does have a speech delay, maybe your SIL doesnt want to address it. That happened with another SIL of mine. Her son is now 3 1/2 and talks alot but at 2 he was also hardly saying anything but no one could tell my BIL & SIL, they didnt want to hear it. A speech delay doesnt mean there's something 'wrong' with a child but lots of parents view it like that and probably hope it works itself out. I know it sounds wrong but that's how it is sometimes. Pediatricians usually ask alot of Q's about speech between 1 and 2 years old so hopefully their ped has or will bring it up, which might make them look at it more than a family member or a 'non professional' tells them.

Good luck, I hope it all works out.
