Taning?

Well with 7 weeks to go...I figured I should start going to a taning salon...the problem is I have never been before...I found a place, but is there any words of advice...I am very pale and can burn easily (I may even be a lost cause, but I figured I would give it a try)

Any advice for my first trip to the taning salon...can anyone explain what happens once you get there.

Sorry so niave..

I am pale as well. Your best bet is to let the tanning place recommend the type of machine and the amount of time. There are some beds that make you burn. There are others that take longer but you wont burn from them.
I do the stand up machines for 5-7 minutes and I am ok. But I make sure I dont get one with NEW bulbs. I made that mistake one and it was painful. Most of the tanning places will have someone there that can help you.
Dont be embarrassed, it is their job to answer your questions and help you.

What town are you looking in? Maybe I can give you a place to go to?

Re: Taning?

I tan quite regularly. I love it. It makes me feel beautiful compared to my pasty white skin.

The first time I tanned I went for 5 minutes and got red. I waited a couple days and bumped it to 8 and then to 10 and so on. I now am at 20 minutes!!

I would suggest using a bronzer lotion. The tanning solon will be able to show you some good lotions.

Also, they make you use eye wear. I normally wear the stickers because they don't leave a line on your nose like the goggles do. However, I still take them off with about five minutes to go-so that my lids get some color. Not everyone wears eye wear but I recommend it. Those bright lights are harsh on your eyes. You don't really notice it right away but it can't be good.

They have fans in most tanning beds. I use it because it's really hot in there!! But, once you get tan-for a more intense tan leave it off-your sweat reflects the light and will make you darker.

I get butt naked (make sure it's clean)-hop in-turn some tunes on-and pass out. When the light turns off it gets chilly right away-thats what wakes me up.

Good Luck and enjoy. It makes for great relaxation time and some personal time too.

I was also a tanning virgin until 1 month before my wedding. I went to Hollywood Tans in Selden, which is a stand-up. The stand-up is great! All I have to say is start out slow. You can always increase closer to the wedding.

Every salon is diiferent with their tanning beds and what the maximum time is. I started at 6 minutes in a 42, increased to the max of 11 min, then really bronzed in the 54 bed. Ask at the front desk and they should be able to help you.

Thanks for posting this (and for the answers ladies)! I'm as pale as they come and need to start tanning soon so I don't blend in with my dress! I've never been to a tanning salon either and I keep putting it off because I'm too chicken! But when I do get the courage to go, it'll be to Hollywood Tans. I know I won't be able to handle laying down in a bed so thank God for stand ups!

Re: Taning?

it's really not claustrophobic... you're not totally enclosed in the lay downs... it's actually quite relaxing - it's warm with fans and music. i love it!! been tanning for years and used to date someone who owned a tanning salon so i know there are some that are worth your money and some that are crap. 'beach bum' is one of the best out there right now, honestly. using a lotion can definitely help... they have bronzing lotions or other kinds. just be careful because even though the bronzers will help you get dark, some of them if you don't apply them evenly, you'll get streaks. i used to use bronzers and switched. i alternate between the stand up and lay down... the lay down is relaxing, but the stand ups hit certain areas (underarms, under your butt cheeks ) that lay downs don't get. but a lot of lay downs give you more color on your face. if you're starting out, make sure the bed you go in didn't get new bulbs that day, lol... that can hurt. i tan easily and even i get a little red with the new bulbs. if it's a good salon, the people in the front will help you with all your questions. good luck!

Re: Taning?

great tips ladies. . .

as a tanning pro though may i suggest NOT using any lotions that say 'tingle' or 'heat' because they make you SO HOT!!!!!!!!!

also - i kno it s cheesy but i always wear a sticker somewhere on my bikini line - i tan naked so i like to see what progress i have made and it leaves a cute little picture LOL i am a cheesball but no one can see so its okay - a little treat for FH to find

I actually was thinking about tanning too, and I have really been putting it off. I am actually going out and signing up to do it today. I was really chicken, but it is getting close to my wedding and I really need to get going!

Re: Taning?

I am pale also and here is my advice....

do a stand-up machine. and I started with 5 minutes-6 minutes the first like 3 times...and each visit after that i up'ed the minutes...7 minutes to see how I feel...and then 8....finally i got to 9 minutes without jumpin out before i got too hott.

Use a tanning lotion that doesnt have tingle sensation bc you will turn red. I was going every other day at first...and then 2 times a week.

I hope that helps.
