ok i've come to the conclusion that i think i need to go tanning old school style. the reason for this is my skin is so so pale, and i have a tendency to burn ridiculously at first, and i know if i do airbrush tanning i'm going to get crispy the first day of my honeymoon. so i figured if i need to get some color for the wedding and i don't want to burn on HM, i'll hit a tanning bed. fine.
my mind is pretty much made up here but does that make sense? I feel like the damage to my skin going tanning a few times is probably the same (if not less) than i would get with a really bad burn on the HM. And i could put spf 50 everywhere but the medicines i take make my skin absurdly prone to burning.
what do u think? Thanks. And also if anyone wants to recommend tanning places for me I'd appreciate it. I used to go in college but haven't gone around here in a while. garden city area.
TIA!!!

i would not go tanning if youre medications make you more prone to burning, go get a spray tan for the wedding, and wear waterproof high spf on your hm

Only because you said that you have made up your mind and your going to do it, I'm not going to try and talk you out of it.
I only go to Beach Bum and use the highest bed they have, its a bronzing bed, I've never burned using it. My face used to burn in cheaper beds, but in the bronzing bed, I never burn

Re: tanning dilemma and need recommendations
Since you do not tan on the regular, you are going to burn the first few times. Tanning in moderation is key.
#1- Are you meds? If so, don't tan. You will burn, Bad.
#2- If you are not on meds, purchase a tanning lotion from the tanning salon. I happen to like Black. It smells nice, keeps my skin subtle and it has a firmer in it.
#3- High Pressure vs Low Pressure. I prefer High Pressure Tanning beds over Low. HIgh tends to be 'safer', bc the bulbs are arranged in a way where point towards the body, stimulating melanin production that gives a darker tan (textbook smarts here people...i had a huge paper in college about it). low pressure will dry out your skin, burn you and the long term effects are generally worse than High pressure (again moderation is key).
#4- Tan like this for a month- 1 week- 2 times (if you burn, one time) and do a half the recommended tanning time (which is usually between 8 to 12 min). 2 week- tan 2 times that week, increasing the time over those days until maximum exposure (8 to 12 min) 3rd week- tan 3 times at max exposure (like a sunday, tuesday, Friday) 4th- Tan up to 4-5 times.
Over this period if you burn, STOP. Usually a base tan will develop over the 3 to 5 time mark
#5- After tan lotion- COCOA BUTTER. This will keep your skin soft, its refreshing and it will keep your skin from tightening.
Where you tan-
Skip Hollywood tans. They tend to only have low pressure, but some do have high pressure.
Beach bum has all high pressure beds. So does Palm Beach. Also, in malverne and hewlett, try High Voltage. Its inexpensive, and the lay downs are high pressure.

Definitely be careful if your taking medications that make you more prone to burning it's true, I had a friend that was on medication and was outside at a bbq and she was suffering for days because her face got soo burnt. Just be careful. Honestly I would do spray tan and really protect yourself on your HM.

Re: tanning dilemma and need recommendations
I have always been a fan of the stand up tanning machines. I feel i get the most even tan!
I always put Olay on my skin after tanning.

i use to go to beach bum too. do not go in for too long and invest in the higher up bronzing machines. these arent your typical tanning beds. i wouldnt go two days in a row- you dont want to get burned and tanning bed burns hurt worse than reg burns-theyre like electric burns. ouch.

Re: tanning dilemma and need recommendations
I am like you, very very pale and decided to start tanning again (haven't in 10 yrs). Today was my first day actually, I signed up for a package at beach bum, Huntington. They always have coupons online, check their website.
The girl that helped me was super knowledgeable and didn't try to push me into something I didn't want. Start slow and build up.

Pale is in. I'm a burner and I don't plan on going tanning just because it is so bad for you. I would just SPF 60 it up for the HM.

Re: tanning dilemma and need recommendations
if medications make you burn it will happen regardless. Either from the tanning bed or natural sun.
If you want some color for you HM I suggest getting airbrushed. Then load up the SPF on your HM

Re: tanning dilemma and need recommendations
thank you for starting this thread, I was just thinking I should start one because we are hitting the THREE month mark in a couple weeks and its time to start working on my base! I haven't gone in years but I don't think a couple of months will hurt to get a nice little glow and avoid HM burn!
Thanks!

Re: tanning dilemma and need recommendations
Ok, so I used to be obsessed with tanning in my early 20's. I should find some pics to show you. I'm having this dilemma too. About two years ago I had a number of pre-cancerous cells removed and some of them were from tanning I was terrified and haven't gone since, but am also considering just for the wedding. I say go in for the absolute minimum. You really don't want to burn!!! I never tanned at beach bum, but I think if I do that's where I'm going.
