I have tattoo located between my shoulder blades that starts just at the nape of my neck. It is about 1 and a half inches square.
As a Jewish person, I am not supposed to have any tattoos at all but whats done is done, I cant take it back and I have no regrets having done it.
Anyway, out of respect for my faith as well as my family, I would like to find a dress that will cover it. Make up is not an option as the tattoo is VERY VERY VERY BLACK. I also have freckles on my back so any skilled makeup artist would not only have to cover the tattoo, but they'd also have to create faux freckles - the idea of which sounds assinine. Otherwise id have a blotch of non freckled skin on my back.
So here I am trying to find a dress that will cover the tattoo so I dont have to worry about make up melting or looking stupid. I have been told that some dress shops can 'build up a dress' but I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.
So I ask YOU, LIW Brides, if you have come across any dresses that may be suitable for my needs, please post pictures and designers so I can specify what I have seen. I prefer to have no sleeves and no lace but I am keeping an open mind. I have combed just about every bridal dress designer website in creation but I thought perhaps I've missed some. There are limited options for me.
Thanks ladies.

You would almost need a victorian style dress with a high neck to cover the tatoo. Is your hair long enough to hide it? I see that you have some time unitl the wedding, could you grow your hair out? What about Laser removal?
I do think it is a beautiful tatoo though. Is your family that conservative that the tatoo would make people feel uncomfortable?

Re: Tattoo issue - Dress suggestions
I am not under any circumstances removing the tattoo. It is a combination of three zodiacal signs - Leo (mine) in the middle, Capricorn(my father) on the left and Saggitarius (my mother) on the right. It represents how I came from my parents and the location represents how they always 'watch my back'. They don't really get it because they are elderly but it means something to me.
I have seen a couple of dresses with high backs or illusion lace in the back that might, at least, MUTE the look. I read somewhere that human hair only grows 1/4 inch per month. By those numbers, my hair will not be long enough to cover it. I don't like hair extensions because I'll know that its not ME when one day I have short hair and the next day it is long.
As far as my family goes, they aren't THAT conservative. I'll be honest with you, like I said I have no regrets about having the tattoo, but I just don't want all of my cranky old relatives pointing to my back all night asking questions. If you have cranky old judgemental relatives, you know what I mean. It is just one less thing to think about.
It may be difficult to find a rabbi that can over look this should I get married in a temple. Jewish ladies should have their shoulders and backs covered in a synogogue. So regardless of the dress, it would be covered for the ceremony, but I feel it would almost be deceptive as the Rabbi will more than likely be a guest at the reception in the same place and will see the tattoo. FH wants to use a conservative Rabbi from his childhood temple who , I am sure, wouldn't like it.
My sister found a Maggie Sottero dress which is the first pic below. The description says it has a high illusion lace back but I cannot seem to find a picture of the back of it. It is a perfect dress for me assuming the back is covered with the lace.
I really hope the back comes up high enough. It is so ideal for me but I am not ready for dress shopping yet. So I am surfing the net and reading magazines and doing all sorts of non-committal things for now. I am waiting for my mother to heal a bit more from her heart surgery. When she is well, I will bring my entourage to Kleinfelds as it seems to be a rite of passage in my family that I can't and won't get out of!!! Its ok though, my parents are paying for it and if it makes mom happy to go there, Ill go there! Truth be told, people come from all over the world to that shop and if anyone can build up a dress, it would be them. They actually have a seamstress there especially for ultra-religious brides (obviously NOT me) who builds up dresses to cover EVERYTHING. I want to be a sexy bride with a sleek look. That dress does it for me.

Have you thought about that tattoo make up. I saw it at one of the dress shops and it is used to cover tattoos. Also I know a bride that had her tattoo airbrushed so no one could see it. Maybe try one of these options first before choosing a dress just because it covers it. Maybe it will make life and planning a little easier. If you need places that carry either one FM me. GOod luck.
