Re: + tax and 18%gratuity.................
I just asked my hall that same question just the other day. She told me that they tax the service charge...which ****s big time.
So in other words, add the gratuity 1st....THEN tax.

They shouldn't be doing that. Every place I went only added tax/service charge to the catering total-except one (and we didn't book them:) You should have a chat with them about it and not let them do that to you!

My hall doesn't tax the gratuity, but they are allowed to do it b/c halls call it a 'Service Charge' not a gratuity

Re: + tax and 18%gratuity.................
For example:
Take your per person per plate Times it by 8.5% (Nassau's tax Rate) Then times it by 18.5% (Tip)
ex: $75.00 x 8.5% = 81.38 x 18.5% = $96.43
So that means you are paying $96.43 per person per plate.
I know it makes you want to vomit. But wait there is more. That doesn't include the tip you give to the Maitre'D ....
The list goes on and on ...

You should check again- I used to work @ a catering facility and it is against the law to tax the gratuity! Make sure you tell them that.

My dad works in a restaurant and when I was bookingmy hall he specifically made me check twice how they did this. He said they should not tax the gratuity. It should be tax then service charge.

Re: + tax and 18%gratuity.................
North Ritz Club told me that they used to tax the total amount MINUS the gratuity....but that they were audited last year and told that they had to start taxing the gratuity as well or else they would get in trouble. It sounded a little weird to me (they don't do that in restaurants, so why is this any different?), but I was told that there was no choice in the matter!

Take the total, then add tax, and then calculate the gratuity based on pre-tax total. You're not supposed to tax based on gratuit.
