Tax problem...

Every year my DH and I get back money from taxes. Well, I just found out that this year we owe and we were not expecting it! I just found out why...

We couldn't figure out why Federal didn't take a lot of money out, when previous years they took out a lot?

We've always claimed 0, and always checked off the Single box on the W-4. Well, since we were married, we both checked off the Married box instead. We just figured that's what we had to do since we were married. We didn't know that we needed to check off the box that says Married but withhold at a higher Single rate in order to get money back??? I had no idea it was in a different tax bracket, and it would make us owe money.

This is just horrible!!! We needed that money, and now we owe it instead. There's absolutely no way that we can pay it. We don't have any extra money. Not a penny. I don't know what to do???

I feel for you girlfriend. I work a second job and even though they take taxes out, it still gets lumped with my 1st job and they look at the taxes on the GROSS. Meanwhile my husband owns his own business and he pays estimated taxes which can go either way depending on his $$$. So I know we are going to owe unless we can get creative with the writeoffs

Seriously, I've been saving for this and I only hope to God what I have saved is enough to cover them. Anyone know of any money trees growing nearby?

I'm getting them done on Friday and I'm just sick thinking about it.

Taxes are so crazy. I am sorry that you all owe. When we changed our taxes to married I noticed that we both started taking home more money. I called the HR department and they assured me it was correct.

I do not know why they do that.

You're better off filing single and having them take the extra $$ out. It's so not fair considering how expensive it is to live.
