Is it my imagination or are the taxes higher on the south shore than the north shore? We've primarily been looking on the north shore and the taxes seem o.k. but we just started looking in some south shore areas and the taxes seem so much higher!

Re: taxes on the south shore
I've been told a lot of that has to do with the larger number of businesses on the N. Shore whose business taxes offset the residental tax burden.
For example, houses in the town I work in (Port Washington) have lower taxes than the town I live in (Wantagh) because there are several large businesses (Publishers Clearing House, Miracle Gro, North Shore Animal League, etc) in Port Washington but no really big businesses in Wantagh.
But maybe I was misinformed....

I heard the same thing Cathy. Please like Northport/East Northport are lower b/c of LIPA...Hauppauge is lower b/c of the industrial park...etc.

Some towns you have to pay Village taxes too and that can add up...Like Lynbrook....My parents were paying close to $9000 for a 12 room house in the yorkshires of lynbrook and that isnt even disctrict 20, it was district 24. Scott

Re: taxes on the south shore
We live on the north shore (Nassau Cty.) and our taxes are definitely less than what my parents pay on the south shore for a comparable house. Not sure why?
