Taxes...moving..getting married??? Oh MY!

I know I've heard a million times that you get a great tax break when you get married....true? Is it really a considerable amount??

How do we do our taxes since we moved half way through 2004? We were thinking of going to H & R Block since they are in many states and would be able to do both our NY and GA taxes.

Any Advice?

owning a house...yes, there should be a tax break..

married doesnt do anything from what my guy told me.

I ask him if i should file before or after getting married. He told me there is no advantage...
we usulaly do taxes in Feb but we get married in Mar

well, Thomas, for you it wouldn't matter, b/c even if you file after your wedding, you are only reporting 2004, so you would still file as single.

Shana, I am a big advocate of doing them yourself, but inter-state is confusing. I think Federal is normal. For state, youhave to get the froms for both states. It defitnely says what to do if you moved. I think you have to figure out how much of your income was made in each state, which sholdn't be too hard, since obviously with such a long distance move, you had different jobs.

When I moved from NY to CA, each state had 'part year' resident forms. I had every intention of filing myself that year, but the forms just became so confusing, I decided to go to H&R Block.

I have no advice about deductions as yet.

I agree, you'll need to report your taxes by using part-year resident forms. For New York. you'll want a IT-203. Look on your state's Department of Revenue website for info for part-year and nonresident tax information.

I believe moving expenses are deductible (in NY anyway, not sure about where you are now) so that might be worth asking about.
