Do we serve tea to the extended families (aunts, uncles) on both the bride's side AND the groom's side? Or is it the grooms extended family and just the bride's parents?
We're trying to get the tea ceremony to be around 15 minutes...but we both have huge families...

Re: TEA CEREMONY question for asian brides!?
I'm not sure how it's supposed to be traditionally, but my FH said that you serve it to whoever wants to participate. We're factoring in about 1-2 hours for the whole ceremony because they have to get fresh tea and a new cup for each person etc etc.
Is there a problem with timing? I know for us it'll be a little tight...so we're doing the tea ceremony before the regular ceremony (instead of during CH or the reception) and just having our families meet us at a hotel a little early and then all driving over to the ceremony site together where I'll change.

i believe technically this is really for the grooms side, so you should at least do his extended family (or as many as you would like to honor). I totally understand about the big families...this can be a time consuming tradition...

i think you can do whatever you want. if you want to keep it short, then i guess you can limit how many people you want to participate in it. For my brother's tea ceremony, it lasted all of 10 minutes because we only had a few people participate. since my FH is not asian, i'm going to have just his mother and stepfather and maybe his grandmother participate. As for my side, i'm having my immediate family and extended family, but i don't have a very big extended family. it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes tops.

1-2 HOURS?!!! woah! We're having an afternoon wedding in the winter...so our ceremony is at noon and the cocktail hour and reception starts right after.
My photog will be doing the portraits for 2-3 hour prior to the ceremony...and before that, we'll be getting ready . So we're trying to figure out when to squeeze the ceremony in without having to miss out on cocktail hour.
Do you think it would be okay to do the tea ceremony with the extended family the day before the wedding at the rehearsal dinner? And then just serve the two sets of parents the day of?

oops i haven't been on in a while...sorry for not responding sooner!
i think it all depends on what your (and his) parents want. i asked him if it would be ok for us to do the tea ceremony on a different day and his mom didn't like the idea.
our ceremony isn't until later in the afternoon (after 4) so we have some time beforehand to do the ceremony...i think we're giving it 1-2 hours because we have a ton of people to serve tea to...
i was in a wedding where they did the tea ceremony in a private room during the reception once everyone had received the main course and then whoever was left at the tables guarded the food so they wouldn't take it away...perhaps you can do that?? although i know it s*cks to miss your reception...
