Tea Length

Tea Length

Is Tea Lenth appropriate for a formal wedding?
I tried to make it as clear as possible that my wedding is formal. With out being rude.

It is a saturday night wedding. I even mentioned it on the wedding website.

My future sister in law just mentioned she is looking into a tea length dress for the wedding.
My immediate thought was- Why would you want a tea length?? I think it would be nice for a day wedding or even a spring or summer wedding.

We are having a Sat night wedding in November.

As a regular guest, I guess I wouldnt care so much but she is going to be in my pictures.

I am the type of person who always says exactly what I am thinking. This wedding has made me bite my tongue on a lot of stuff with his family. His mom and this particular sister are the type of people that will say that they agree and behind your back talk about it.

I dont want to say anything because she will run to her mom and it will become about how picky I am and how this wedding is so big and blah blah. (he has 2 sisters one is very much a tom boy. Her wedding cost $7k and the one I am talking about would have had a big one but got married out of state and didnt really have the money to have a large wedding or honey moon bc they were trying to buy a house. Which she mentions at least 8 times whenever our wedding is brought up.)

We are paying for our own and it is not extravagant. (no horse pulled carriage or $2000 invitations) It is more than his two sisters have spent but in the grande scheme of long island weddings I think I am middle of the road.
We already own a home and are going to St. Lucia for the honeymoon. So, I think there may be a little jealousy. (I asked both sisters to be in the wedding party but the out of state one said she couldnt because she was trying to get pregnant and probably a little bit of a money issue)

Sorry to unload all of this but I guess I needed to vent and feel out the tea length thing.

Re: Tea Length

i don't think tea length is a problem... unless it's a really informal dress. but most tea length dresses are not informal

Well I'm having a Saturday night formal wedding and my BMs are wearing tea length dresses - so I don't think it's a problem at all.

:) Thanks!!!
I think the issue is I am picturing the tea length dress his mom wore to her daughters wedding. :)

Generally for a formal affair a girl should wear an evening gown or a dressy cocktail-length dress.

In my opinion, tea-length is more of a daytime look.

Alot of cocktail dresses are tea length...I actually wore a wedding gown that length for my first wedding and it was lovely..... As long as it is dressy and not a casual cotton dress or something you will be fine...Don't worry...You are the bride, and don't let anyone elses attire bother you....Even in pics....You can't really control it and you will look great and who cares really what they look like...You most probably will display pics of the two of you around the home...

Tea length is very chic. I was planning on tea length dresses but the guys are in kilts are it just wouldn’t look right. Don't listen to this person, remember the number one rule of wedding planning- everyone has an opinion and you don't have to listen!

offer to go shopping with her if you're worried about it!

Are you putting 'black tie' on your invitations to indicate you want women in gowns and men in tuxes? I don't believe many people would wear tea length dresses if you put black tie.

That being said, IMHO, there's nothing 'not elegant' about a beautiful tea length dress.

If it's something you feel so strongly about, just tell her -- or cut her off and tell your mom to tell her.

I would not sweat it so much. Just because it is tea-length does not mean it is not formal. There are plenty of gorgeous tea-length formal dresses.

Me personally, I just hate the look of tea length dresses - formal or not!

But I would say just let it slide...there are much bigger issues I'm sure you'll have to worry about and afterwards you'll probably think it wasn't such a big deal anyway!

(and now the devil of my left shoulder says...if you don't care for your future SIL, let her look like an a** in an informal dress when all your family and friends will go formal)

I don't think theres anything wrong with tea length.. some of them are absolutely gorgeous!! Unless of course you're having black tie then thats another story.

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with t-length either, but everyone is allowed their bridzilla moments and if you want this to be one of yours then insist she wear a gown. Your only going to do this once and if it bothers you that much then insist.

Im chiming in about black tie. Honestly, people dont understand black tie. Women are not going to all wear gowns. I wouldnt. And do you want people wearing gowns and competibg w the bp anyway?
