I am 50/50 italian irish. I have that stereotypical family. Parents are HS sweethearts. My Italian grandmother didn't like my mother because she was irish but then again no woman would have been good enough for my father. My irish family thought my mother was crazy for bringing an 'Eye-talian' around.
Nothing too exciting but I like it this way!
the BM at my best friend's wedding last friday made a joke about how could he marry an 'eye-talian' it was hysterical!!

Bon don't be mad but it is. Don't take it the wrong way but brookhaven/bellport is VERY different then Lynbrook/ER/RVC where I lived. And I can say this because I have lived in both places -- not just on speculation or stereotype! But to be honest LI is a whole other world (but we won't get into that again!)

Just because you're from queens does not mean you're ghetto. I know somebody who always makes comments like OH NO i dont go into queens, and once about if she had to take the train it would have to be close by to where she was going and not walk too much, yes bc you will get robbed or shot once you step foot into queens...Its not all urban, we do have residential areas and is very suburban like.

Not all Puerto Ricans steal silverware. We do steal a lot of those hotel condiments and hotel towels though...
I am not puerto rican and I take all the condiments from hotels! If they are good ones I put them in my bag each night so the housekeeper will put out new ones each day
OMG I do the same thing.
I have quite a travel collection going on!

When you meet a person who appears 'latin' or 'hispanic' do NOT just assume they are Mexican. This might seem like an obvious one to some people, but you would not believe how often someone says to me 'you're Mexican, right?'
Not all Irish people like Corned Beef and Cabbage! Lord knows I don't!
very true (about the mexican statement) or saying 'they're all the same - spanish'
I was out to dinner with my FFILs, who are SO WHITE and our waiter was clearly latin (had an accent, etc.). My FFIL, being good natured, proceeds to say 'so where are you from, Mexico?' The waiter didn't even respond, no joke. Later on he made a remark about how he is Colombian. I was embarrassed.
FH's grandma uses totally inappropriate words for people of different ethnicities. . . not slurs or anything just words that havent been heard since hte 40s
and she does this in public bc she doesnt know there is anything wrong with it - i get SO embarassed i actually avoid doing stuff with her!!!
my gransma used to do that too. she never did it to be mean but that is what she would say growing up

The funny thing is, my Cuban grandmother is beyond racist. It's almost as if she doesn't realize that she is in the minority and doesn't remember the adversity she overcame when she came here and brought 5 teenage boys who spoke no English to the schools. She particularizes the different Latin cultures - doesn't like Mexicans but loves Puerto Ricans. On top of that, she doesn't like black people but she loves Chinese people. I just DON'T UNDERSTAND IT.
ETA: On top of that, I cried over it one day because I was so confused/embarrassed and then my Dad got made at me! My Dad is the most liberal, colorblind man I've ever known (probably because of what he went through himself) but he just kept saying 'she is too old for you to hold her to a modern standard.' Fine, I understand that, but she also needs to tone it down when we're in public or there are people of the relevant races that she's talking about around.

I have been hearing that one my whole life. And now that I am marrying one my great uncle just calls him 'The Guini' -- my sister married the nice irish cop!

I'm Greek and we don't physically spit on brides as they walk down the aisle as they did in My Big fat Greek Wedding!
We do, however, make a semi-spitting sound (no saliva is involved) in order to ward off the evil eye in case someone is jealous of you and wants to cause you harm.

My step-brother is from Plainview and everytime he comes to my moms house in FOREST HILLS, he cant stop saying how ghetto it is. I crack up at him and tell him Im gonna drop him off in Brownsville Brooklyn and then he could tell me what ghetto is. I hate when people misuse the word 'ghetto' I know what real 'ghetto' is.

My parents live on Yellowstone by 108th street and they have a condo on the 29th floor of a beautiful building and he has the nerve to say that. Funny thing is he's Jewish and where my parents live is an all Jewish beautiful neighborhood so I dont get where the ghetto comes in. He says the brick buildings are ghetto. I just laugh.
