Teach me something. . . .

Re: Teach me something. . . .

When you meet a person who appears 'latin' or 'hispanic' do NOT just assume they are Mexican. This might seem like an obvious one to some people, but you would not believe how often someone says to me 'you're Mexican, right?'

Not all Irish people like Corned Beef and Cabbage! Lord knows I don't!

I am 50/50 italian irish. I have that stereotypical family. Parents are HS sweethearts. My Italian grandmother didn't like my mother because she was irish but then again no woman would have been good enough for my father.
My irish family thought my mother was crazy for bringing an 'Eye-talian' around.

Nothing too exciting but I like it this way!

When people learn that Debi's Dad is a former Amishman, they think she's Amish. Amish denotes a religious affiliation. Mary MOB

I was out to dinner with my FFILs, who are SO WHITE and our waiter was clearly latin (had an accent, etc.). My FFIL, being good natured, proceeds to say 'so where are you from, Mexico?' The waiter didn't even respond, no joke. Later on he made a remark about how he is Colombian. I was embarrassed.

This is one that shocks everyone who is Catholic.

Dec 8 is a Holy Day of Obligation, it is the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary NOT Jesus . . .

Mary was conceived in St Anne's womb with no orginal sin, so the was prepared from birth to become the mother of Jesus ( which doesnt mean she had no sin, she was just born the Original sin given to us by Adam and Eve )

so it has nothing to do with 'virginal conception'

a pet peeve of mine since the term 'immaculate conception' is used so widely

lol a little deep i know . . .

I just learned this not that long ago. My mother was getting upset that one of us was using the term out of context!

Not all Puerto Ricans steal silverware. We do steal a lot of those hotel condiments and hotel towels though...

I am not puerto rican and I take all the condiments from hotels! If they are good ones I put them in my bag each night so the housekeeper will put out new ones each day

Not all black people are late...im very punctual. (I know all types of people that are late)

and

The Bonx is not all bad. Just like L.I. we have our good and our bad parts. I actually from a very nice area. I was buying life insurance the other day and insurance agent didnt want to come to my house because when I told him Im in the Bronx he said 'is it the projects????' Well first of all why the hell would I be buying a million dollars of life insurance if I lived in the proects...I think I would need to have other more important bills to worry about. And secondly my parents Coop is worth just as much as some peoples homes on L.I.

I just read a great non-fiction memoir about an ex-Amish woman....she grew up Amish and even went back after her rumspringa, but then events in her adulthood forced her to leave the church. Anyway, it was a great book (wish I could remember the name right now) and it's a fascinating religion/culture.
