Just because you're from queens does not mean you're ghetto. I know somebody who always makes comments like OH NO i dont go into queens, and once about if she had to take the train it would have to be close by to where she was going and not walk too much, yes bc you will get robbed or shot once you step foot into queens...Its not all urban, we do have residential areas and is very suburban like.
Queens is a very good place to live, who said bec you live in Queens you are ghetto?? I don think so. On the news every evening, I hear bad news about the same 2 boroughs, Im not going to name but they start with a B, its hardly about Queens.
certain ppl think that about most of the boroughs. SOme ppl forget theres more to NYC than Manhattan

also in the orthodox religion, you dig up a person's grave after 7 years and you take out their bones and clean it with this oil thing or whatever and its this whole other ritual and things that go along with it...my family that is old school does this but not sure if all orthodox people do that, especially not here since i dont think you can
Never head of the digging up people, I wouldnt want to see that , lol

oh yeah this is a good one
italians used to have these women that they paid to come to funerals and cry and wail
in italian culture wakes and funerals are over the top - with people screaming and crying and throwing themselves around. . .
my parents call wakes here 'death parties' bc people talk and chat and look at pictures
when my grandma passed my mom, dad, aunt and uncle sat in the front and did not MOVE the entire time. . . . they greeted everyone that came to them but there was NO talking to them about ANYTHING except to offer condolences - it was freaky a little bit if you arent used to it
anyway so it was kind of an honor to have people freaking out at your funeral so they would hire these women to just cry and wail and carry on
i think they were called Lamentari? if you have ever seen 'Divorce, Italian Style' they were in there i believe
in the christian orthodox religion its actually the opposite...they say you are not supposed to mourn in the way of crying out loud, screaming and things like that because the soul wont go into heaven but instead remain here on earth. And then you get all these crazy stories bc of this, like in my family my great uncle cried histerically at his wifes funeral and supposedly everyone still hears her voice bc of this
also in the orthodox religion, you dig up a person's grave after 7 years and you take out their bones and clean it with this oil thing or whatever and its this whole other ritual and things that go along with it...my family that is old school does this but not sure if all orthodox people do that, especially not here since i dont think you can

They do the digging up in Greece because their graveyards are so small and they don't have anymore space. In fact, if you're buried in Athens, the church where you're buried will dig up someone's bones after a certain period of time and give them to the family to rebury somewhere else, otherwise they'll be ground up and tossed away.
They don't do it so much here because there are still a lot of big graveyards, especially in Queens! maybe that's why everyone thinks we Queens folks are ghetto...luckily we know better!

Okay....the reason of this thread is to stop stereotypes no reinforce them. You said the bad boroughs start with a B... I just got finished saying that the I hate when people do this. I live in the Bronx... a very nice part I may add...my parents Coop cost as much as many peoples houses in LI and Qeens and if you really look into the numbers Queens is not really that much better than the Bronx.

oh yeah when i go to romania the crazy stories i hear, but i have to admit ive never been to the house where supposedly you can still hear her screaming out 'MY LEG, MY LEG' because what happened was that her kid was playing and started running out into the street and she went to save the kid bc a car was flying by and the mother got hit instead and died' but no matter how ridiculous i think it is i am scared to go
also in eastern europe most of the wakes take place in the home can you imagine that, the women of the family dress the deceased and fix them up and for 2 days the body stays in the house, usually its on the table or something
yeah i dont know what the whole 7 years thing really means, but cleansing their bones for whatever reason.

oh yeah i was JUST going to post this
Italians are laid out in their kitchens, you rent this special table to put them on ( they used to use the kitchen table but obviously not anymore )
i tried to explain funeral homes to them and they were HORRIFIED at the concept
oh yeah and there are all these rules of mourning like no TV and no radio. . . and there is a certain amount of time you have to wear black - it depends on the person who passed and your age at the time
my mom's mom passed away when my mom was 16 and the first time my mom DIDNT wear black was for her wedding day when she was almost 18!
oh yeah and last year i was in italy for all soul's day it was so nice you go and sit on the tombstone ( its a huge slab of marble, they dont bury people under the ground there ) and you just hang out and people walk around and visit you - its a nice way to remember those who have passed

OH yeah there aren't funeral homes, thats why my dad said he wants to open one up in romania...sometimes theres problems with the ambulance coming to get a dead body for an autopsy or something like that if there is bad weather or something.
Yeah same thing here, you have to wear black for a long time, again mostly the old school people will do that, the younger generation is a bit different.

People are usually shocked to find that I speak perfect English.
Then they ask where I'm from...and I say New York. Then the follow up question is always, 'no, but where are you from ORIGINALLY?' . Once again, that answer is New York.
For some reason it's hard for people to imagine asians as american born.
that must be frustrating!

LOL its funny bc now when I go its so modern and different, when you go to the countryside though then yeah alot of it is still like that...but in the city they dont have billboards theres GIGANTIC plasmas everywhere, everyone drives real nice cars, theres benihanas and everything. I did go to the countryside once and that was a culture shock though, but so interesting to see it, i love seeing such a different way of life.
