Hi ladies! I posted a similar post on NWR but I have other questions. I have a BS in Psych-Child Life/Applied Child Development and a Masters of Social Work. I work at a college and I am considering getting my Masters in Childhood Education. They are telling me I will need to get a whole other Masters. Some people said I should contact the state or BOCES to see if I really need to do that. I cannot get through to anyone!!! And words of wisdom? I really want to get my NYS certification but if it'll be a whole other Masters...well, that's a lot!!!
HELP!
TIA ladies!

Re: Teacher advice....
its quite possible that you would need to get an additional masters, but maybe some of your credits would count towards the new one. It does seem that your BS and MS are much different than that of a teacher. I'm thinking your training was much different as well. But I'm really not sure!
But def call BOCES again and again.. hehe because i have heard of so many loop holes. like my el ed is N-6 and my spec ed is 1-6. I heard that there might be away around getting my spe ed extended to include Kindergarten.
So basically my advice is to talk to BOCES first before you panic!
let us know what happens!!

Re: Teacher advice....
They say nothing carries over from social work to education. Meanwhile, I have an entire bachelor's in child development and even some edu. classes. I can't believe that NOTHING would transfer over!!!
Grrr..
but then again, I could get my Masters in Childhood Ed. for free so maybe I should shut up!!!

It prob wont carry because you did some edu classes for your BA, not Masters.
If its F R E E go for it... just do it! hehe

Re: Teacher advice....
i beliebe to teach elementary school in NY u do need a seperate masters in elementary ed. unless there are just education classes u can take to certify since u alrady have a masters but then again a masters in elementary ed would be taking all ed classes....i mean im a music teacher w/ my BA and masters and if i wanted to do elem ed i think i would have to go for a seperate degree. i hope i didnt confuse u.

School social worker would be nice but that's the impossible job to get on LI!!!!!
I work at a college now in disability services but I can take free classes. I would like to teach so I am thinking of getting my Masters in Education so that I have that option!

You're right! It is a great job. It's really hard to get though. You need to know someone and have a CSW which can be a long road!
I think I will start the EDU classes because they are free and go from there! Any education is a good education, right?
