Teachers

Is anybody Preggo or did anyone have a baby before she received tenure? It will be my third year in the district next year, but my position isn't tenure track..What are your opinions on having a baby before receiving tenure????
Thanks

Re: Teachers

I feared getting prego my first year of teaching so I opted to not teach until after I have my baby. I know I'm in the minority though. Several people I know have done what you plan to do, so I wouldn't stress. You never know how long it will take you to conceive, so don't not TTC based on your job. I only did so bc of my family's history (bedridden pregnancies...) but I'm sure that's not the case with you (and I somewhat regret it.) Good luck!

Re: Teachers

This happened to my friend last year. She took a very quick maternity leave and her tenure appointment was delayed by the amount of time that she was out.

They cannot discrimante against you because of pregnancy, however doesn't mean they won't use another excuse either. You know your administration best, talk to your building rep, but if your position isn't tenure track I don't think it will make a huge difference.

The only other thing I can think of, in my distrcit length of leave varies by whether or not you have tenure, another reason to speak to your building rep.

Good luck.

Re: Teachers

I received tenure in sped and then switched to reg. ed. and had to do tenure all over (but 2 year track not 3) and now I'm in my 2nd year and will be receiving tenure at the end of this year.

My DH and I are planning to TTC next month. I think I'd want to wait until december b/c of the tenure. This way I would be able to start school next year so tenure takes effect and then go out on maternity.

My DH wants a baby NOW LOL and I have given into TTC a month earlier than I have planned. Not that I needed much convincing either .

I don't think it would effect tenure, if anything, like swags said, your district may want to delay you officially receiving tenure for the amount of time you take maternity.

There have been several girls in my building that have taken maternity and they still received tenute.

Hope everything works out for you!
