Re: TEACHERS
I'm no longer a teacher, I have a degree in elementary ed but had such a bad student teaching experience i changed my mind.
But i believe as long as you have a Masters Degree in education it doesn't matter what your bachelors is.
You need to take certification exams too.

So i can continue....and work towards my masters in education and then get certified....

Re: TEACHERS
lol, as far as I know, if you go get a masters in education, you could teach business, with your bachelors in business.
I'm not sure how it works if you want to teach in a different area, it may require a masters in education and a certain number of credits in the specific area you want to teach.
You would definitely need the masters, student teaching, and certification tests.

I just did the same thing. My undergraduate degree is in Criminal Justice, but i am now a certified teacher. I just had to get my masters in education and pass the certification tests. Student teaching is included in your master's degree...so it's not really a separate thing.

Re: TEACHERS
Yeah, I guess I made it sound like it wasn't included. It's just that you can't really work when you're student teaching, so, if you do your masters as a part time thing, you have to plan to take a semester off of work for student teaching.

Lisa...my friend had a ba in computer science. She went back to school and got her masters in elementary ed and currently teaches 3rd grade in the bronx. Most colleges and universities have programs for people who did not get their undergrad degree in edu. For example Iona college has what is called the transition a and transition b program.
Like the girls said you would have to take the proper tests that go along with your area. HTH

Also, if you get your MA in your subject you can teach college. I have my masters in Lit and I teach college English.

If you want to get your masters in education and you have your bachelors in something totally different, you can go through the NYC Fellows Program.

Re: TEACHERS
Are you interested in teaching in NYC or LI?
If you join the teacher's fellows program through the department of education (NYC) you can teach while getting your masters degree (and NYC will pay for your masters). You can also sub part time with a BA and work on getting your MA.
I'm not sure about LI though.

Re: TEACHERS
You need your MA in Education or if you have a BA in Education. NYC does have a fellows program where you teach and earn the degree, but they are being much more selective now because for elementary positions the city is even getting tougher to get jobs!

Re: TEACHERS
Nope. I know teachers that have degrees in poly sci, literature, finance... if you don't have a BA in education, then you do need a masters in it... but check the state regs to be sure.

Re: TEACHERS
In order to teach secondary, I believe that you just need to have a certain number of undergrad credits in the subject you want to teach. Say you want to teach math...you will need X amount of math credits and if you dont have them alot of colleges will offer them to you at the nassau/suffolk county college rate.
And of course you need to student teach and pass all the cert. tests like everyone mentioned before.
ETA...I also have a bba in business and went back to teach business in hs and i was missing a couple credits so they let me make up the credits while taking grad classes.

Re: TEACHERS
I'm getting a BA in english and I will still be able to teach, you will have to find an alternate way to get certified though...with your degree, you should be able to teach something like economics...I think you should check out the Department of Education website..
