OMG how I wish I had went to school to teach....I was just talking about it last night to FMIL saying how I dont think emergency response is my thing anymore. Infact its depressing-oh well gotta make money though right?

It's not too late...you can apply to be a Teaching Fellow. They pay for your masters

I decided last year to go back to school to become a teacher and will finally graduate next may. When I looked into the fellows program they only wanted either special education teachers or Math/Science teachers. I've also heard very negative things about the program so make sure you do all your research before signing up! It's not as easy as it appears.

That's exactly how I was. For the longest time I was constantly debating whether or not I should teach. I started part time to test it out and see if I really liked it. I managed to work full time the following semester too and I just recently went part time at work because I'm doing fieldwork one day a week and I took another day so I could have extra time to focus on my school work. I'm very lucky because my job has been extremely lenient with my hours. Next semester when I'm student teaching I'll have to quit but it's only for one semester. If you really want to teach then you have to go for it. There are lots of programs that cater to people who have careers in other areas and can only go to school part time. You just have to look around. I go to Hunter and you can just take one class at a time if you want. Hope things work out for you!

They pay for your masters but they place in a school that they want, usually in the not so good neighborhoods that can't get anyone to teach in, and since they pay for ur masters you have to stay in these schools for 2 years after you've ocmpleted your masters otherwise they want their money back.

Not so good afterall!!!

Okay, let me clear up rumors about the Teaching Fellows. First off, I am NOT a fellow. I did my undergrad and masters in teaching.

You are assigned to a borough, and NOT a school. Once you have been given a borough assignment, such as Queens, you shop your resume around like any normal certified teacher would. So, you have choice in your school - don't want to teach in a school in a 'bad' area - then don't apply there.

I work in Astoria and there are TONS of teaching fellows in this school. Let me tell you, my school is a dream to work in! Each year we have sooooooooooo many well qualified, experienced teachers coming for interviews here - we can DEFINITELY find people to work in our school but fellows get hired as well as these more qualified teachers.

It is true you need to commit for two years, HOWEVER these two years are not exclusive to when you finish your masters. I just had a fellow friend leave this school after her first two years, it's not two in addition to the years you were working in the school and working on your masters.

There are ups and downs of being a fellow. It's not all fun and games and summers off as many nonteachers think. It is hard work that must be balanced with the added stress of going to school for your masters. BUT - teaching is a great job and I think (and I'm sure others will disagree) that it is very competitive with the salaries of other jobs you can get right out of college. Plus we have lots of other opportunities - very rarely will you find a field where you can do outside work for upwards of $75 an hour (tutoring).

Sorry to rant on and on.... I just hate when people dont have their information straight!

Well they must have changed the Queens option because when I was looking into it a few years ago, there were only schools in Brooklyn and The Bronx that you could apply to. Two of my cousins had the same problem and just decided to do their Masters on their own.

I do agree that its alot of work though, FH is teaching right now and going for his masters and he barely has time to breathe....he loves summers off but once september rolls around its craziness all over again

Thanks for the info....do you know if it's only for certain subjects? I remember it was only for Math/Science....I just got my BA in Italian and have been sending my resume to private schools to teach, I have 17 education credits and had a bad school during my student teaching and decided not to follow through with it....I still want to teach but I won't be certified until I complete my student teaching or work in a private school for a year....I would consider the Teaching Fellows bc I still have to do my masters....if you have any other info please let me know
