I would never break up a fight! NYS has such strict rules about getting in the middle of a fight....let the deans do it!

Re: Teachers!

Well our union tells us not to (UFT) b/c if we get hurt we do not get workman's comp so they advise us to call an AP or dean or school aide to break up the fight. I also hate to watch kids fight and wish I could do something but a co-work got beat up and scratched pretty bad from a fight and all they gave her was a 1/2 day off for court/ doctor appointment for an HIV TEST! Luckily, I haven't had any bad or serious fights b/c I usually calm the kid down when I see an argument escalating!

I agree with you 100%! I broke up a bad girl fight all by myself about two months ago....the adrenaline kicks in and I was right on it! I can't watch two people hurt eachother like that.

Not to scare you or anything, but I teach in a suburban area here on LI and fights still happen. Not too often, but they do....kids will be kids! Don't be afraid though....they usually don't last that long.

Don't be nervous at all...You will enjoy teaching believe me and theses little fights that last a few minutes will not matter b/c you will be so happy in the classroom...I also work in a public hs in the Bronx where I live and teach special ed...so sometimes my kids are emotionally disturbed and don't understand the consequences with fighting...and really become angry and have counseling 1 or 2 x a week for their anger issues so that's why I really need to be careful btw we do not have metal detectors!

That makes no difference...different neighborhoods, different set of problems...and they're equally as bad regardless of what socio-economic group you're teaching

I know what you mean, when a fight starts, I just impulsively have to seperate it, and then afterwards i'm like 'holysmokes, I could've broken my neck'...but knowing that still doesn't prevent that adrenaline from kicking in
