My school has no weekend activities.
The only things I'm required to attend after school hours is Open House and evening conferences.
Everything else is optional (science fair, RINGO night (like BINGO), Family Bowling, Family Ice Skating night, etc.).

I don't think it's fair that your school requires you to attend things on weekends. Do you get paid for them? I hope you do!

same as jenn. parent-teacher conferences, back to school night, and one concert. thats it.

everything else is 'optional'. we don't get paid if we decide to chaperone.

at my old school, we got paid like $60 or something to chaperone an evening or weekend event. i think it went up to $80 the last year i was there.

I assume you are a union member and have a contract, unless you teach in a private school. If you have a contract, what does it say about it? If you have a union rep, contact him/her and find out if they can legally do that. Sounds to me like mandatory overtime that you should not be required to work.

After all the crap I just went through to get a teaching job (and mind you a PART TIME teaching job) in Long Island, my advice is to be happy you have a job!! I would gladly give my weekends if I got a full time job in a good district! JMO

Just curious Rachel......do they 'require' it....or 'strongly encourage' your attendance (as in non-tenured teacher).......that's where they get ya - it's like if you don't go it's strongly frowned upon, but could possibly be used against you when up for tenure......it's just wrong in my opinion. I wouldn't think you would have to go to every single thing. Show up to a couple, and see who goes....if there are only a handful of teachers, then maybe you don't have to go to all of them.....although my district doesn't have a lot of weekend things, I never went to one of them.....

Here's what I think you should do.....explain to your principal that you hold down a weekend job (saving for wedding, place to live, car payments, etc)....Tell them that you will try to work out your work schedule to allow you to go to perhaps one weekend activity a month.......see how she takes that......sounds like a reasonable lie to me, no? That's what I would do...good luck with it all - I know exactly what you're going thru!!!!

Awwwwwwwwwww *putting my arms around Rachel and squeezing*

I know how you feel sweetie, I really do. We have some great parents and we have some, lets say, winners. Soon they will be telling you how to teach music too.......

It was the first event, it can only get better. Can you bring a friend next time? Its so different when you're not married with kids going to picnics and stuff like that. Cause you could be completely enthralled in your OWN family, rather than the entire school.

These people are just feeling you out right now.....they do that to everyone I'm sure. When they see you're not a wet noodle flake, they will warm up to a bit more. It just stinks that you have to go thru this first.......I promise it will get better. Some will always be jerks though - they think they know everything, but that has nothing to do with you.......try my lie and see if it works!!

Can you talk to Lanae about the way these parents treated you and the best way to deal with them? Are you comfortable enough with her (she seems like a doll).....are you covering for her? Or you just work with her?

Sorry you had a bad time, Rach

Just think, only 3 more months till JT is home for good and then you'll have a partner in crime for these boring things

a lot of times, like Marni said, new teachers are strongly encouraged to go...bullied...

I ****ed it up my first year...and then would go to events b/c I wanted to see the students, not to impress the admin...like sporting events, plays, etc...
