Teachers Help

I don't know what to do. I am finishing my masters in december. I have to take the CST's. Problem is, do I have to take it by a certain time? Because. It is only offered October 18 , February 14(I will be on my honeymoon) and then again on April 24. Can I wait til april to take it or am I going to mess up going for my permenant certification. I don't know what to do. I am trying to get in touch with my mom. I don't want to know when my shower is, but I have a feeling it is one weekend in October. So I don't want to pay the hefty price for the test and then not be able to take it. Can it wait til April? Thank you

Re: Teachers Help

maybe you can mention to your mom offhand that the test is in october and see what the reaction is - maybe if it is that weekend they can move it. you have up to 5 years after you get your provisional certification to get your permanent, so i think you can wait until april if you need to!

Re: Teachers Help

How long ago did you get your provisional certificate? You need your CSTs for your permanent certificate and you have five years from the time you got your provisional certificate. If you still have a couple of years, I would wait - take it in April or at a later time. But if your provisional certificate expires this winter, then I would say something to your mother about taking this test in October and how you're under the gun, just so she has a heads up and can figure out what to do about your shower. Good luck!

Ok!! I just checked and I got my provisional in February 2000. So I have a year left. I can take it in April and do my video this year at some point and I should be ok. RIGHT???
Thanks girls.

Re: Teachers Help

I think you have time. The video isn't too bad once you get past the strict criteria (20-30 minute lesson, whole group instruction, cooperative learning). I think I made 4 or 5 tapes and submitted what I thought was the best one. It sounds much harder than it is. Good luck with everything!

I heard that they NYS is doing away with the video in February. Did anyone else hear about this?

Re: Teachers Help

They are doing away with the video only if you did not get your provisional before Feb. 2004...If you got you provisional before this date then you are required to do the video!!

Re: Teachers Help

My school stinks. They tell me nothing. I was just on the NYS teaching sit and it says I do not need the CST's or video to be permanantly certified. All it says is I need my provisional, master's degree, $100 and application. Can this be true. I am getting my master's in special ed. Hmm!! Just doesn't sound right. I also just took the online Child Abuse course through BOCES. I passed, I have my certificate and everything. I am going to do the violence prevention course tomorrow. Yeah!!

That doesn't sound right... I got my CQ in 1998, and wasn't grandfathered in for ANY of those requirements (although I WISHED I had been!).

Call BOCES and ask for Pat. She was always such a huge help to me. She'll be able to tell you exactly what you need, and when.

Good luck!

Re: Teachers Help

If your degree is in special ed you do not need to do the video, no matter when you got your provisional certificate....I'm not sure about the cst's, but you may be exempt from that too...if you work in NYC, you should call the uft certification hotline (number is in the front of the ny teacher's newspaper) they are actually pretty helpful...

Re: Teachers Help

jenn...I hear you...I was actually the first year all these testing requirements came into effect...one year before...I wouldn't have had to do any of it...but I'm done...and it feels nice to have a license that says 'Expires: never'
