Teachers I have a question

Teachers I have a question

I am a certified teacher (general and spec. ed birth-6th grade) I grduated in May 2008 and just cannot find a job I am currently subbing and its not bad but its not every day and I have no medical insurance. I would like to have a baby in a few years and I need to have insurance before doing that. I am thinking bout giving up my dream of being a teacher and going back to school to be an x-ray tech or something else in the medical field where I will actually be able to get a job. If I end up doing that instead of getting my masters will I automatically lose my teaching certification after 5 years? I dont want to just throw away all the hard work i put in to become a teacher. I dont know what to do! Help!!!!!!!

Have you tried NYC schools. They are def. hiring for special ed!! I have a list of fax numbers if you want. Let me know
I was going to give up too...glad i didn't

HTH!!

EDITED: You will not automatically loose your teaching license. You will eventually (i think it is five years) if you do not use it or get a Masters... don't quote me on the time frame

If you don't get a masters within 5 years you will lose it (hence DH taking 9 credits in grad school this year). I would not give up your dream of teaching though especially if you want to have children. We found out that basically everything is covered when it comes to the baby, the hospital and everything else with United/Empire. Also, I see a reproductive endocrinology specialist which is completely covered and if at some point I need IVF they cover the first $50k in full which is crazy! DH and I were just talking about last night how he'd like to work from home eventually but not until after we are done with kiddos which will be a long time from now since we aren't trying.

Have you looked into leave replacements that could turn permanent? Or Queens/Brooklyn jobs?

Its jsut so competitive and i dont know anyone that matters that can get me a job. I pursued teaching in the city right out of school and got nowhere.

I think they are only automatically covered if you arent married
I think the fellows program is only for people who have a bachelors but not one in education.

what about a catholic/private school. they don't pay as well as public schools, but you would have medical and you would get experience which could lead to a public school job.

I would try NYC again. I know they are always looking for special Ed teachers. I wouldn't let my teacher license go. The teaching market is bad right now due to the economy. I think it will pick up and they will be looking for people. Don't lose hope.

Crashing (sorry) just to note that no field is a guarantee to employment. My brother went back to school to get an x-ray tech license and its been difficult for him to find a full-time position in the NYC area. He even said some of his classmates had to leave the state to find a job.

I think you should try private schools and NYC schools. Not sure if NYC schools are hiring right now, but you should still give it a try and not give up on your dream.

Hey Gail

I was in the same boat as you were, but reversed. I was in the TV/Video production field...couldnt find a job so i decided to pursue my underground dream of being a teacher.

i applied to district after district after district after district even though my father had been a teacher in the city for 30+ years.

then one day i decided to try the city... i got a job the next day.

the city is hiring, considering we have like 4 new teachers in the building... and i can almost guarantee that my school is currently looking for a position to be filled. I cannot make any promises but I can try. I will talk to my assistant principal (the nicest lady on this earth) and get back to you.

i tried this before, but got nowhere... this time i know which people to ask. :)

Have you registered on OLAS.org for Nassau & Suffolk??? I always see special ed jobs on there.

I'm not a teacher, but my mom is (elementary spec. ed.) . They were hiring at her school (Floral Park/Bellerose) for teacher's that retired.

Re: Teachers I have a question

I say if teaching is your dream, then dont give up on it. right not the dept of ed is on a hiring freeze for new teachers in NYC, but i saw on the DOE website that it should be lifted by april 2010.

when you get pregnant, can you get on DH's insurance?
Also, if you are pregnant, and not working in, they cannot deny you medicaid. and thats the best to get while being pregnant because everything is freeeeee and you go to the doc 10000 times while your pregnant. they will ask for DHs info though, but you can always say youre seperated, they usually dont bother w/proof because it says on the insuarcne application that if you are pregnant, you cannot be denied insurance.
