Teachers I need advice and Support!

I have this boy in my class who is not BAD but he is annoying and talkative and gets into minor arguments with other children Anyway on friday i called his mom ( this was the 2d time in one week I called) and she said she will talk to him and she will come to school monday. She did and we met and met with the student as well. everythign seemed fine until... I noticed that he had two scrap marks on the side of his face( he wears glasses so i guess thats why i didnt see them at first). So now of course I ask him what happened and he says' YOU DID THAT TO ME' I said 'what' he said ' b/c you called my mom, she did this to me!!' I was so heartbroken you have no idea. So i took him to the Ap who asked him what happend and he told her his mom hit him with a belt buckle b/c i called her friday about his behavior. Now its in teh AP hands but I still cant stop feeling this guilt like this poor kid got hit with a BELT b/c of me!!!

DO NOT feel guilty about this!
You have no control what goes on at home once you call. If this child has an abusive mother, all that you can do is what you have already done - tell the proper authorities at your school!!
You called home becuase the boy was causing a disturbance. You have every right to do that.
And in the long run, I think you've done this boy a favor becuase now the abuse is in the open and something can be done about it.
hugs to you. i can't imagine how terrible you feel about this....

How awful You should NOT feel bad about this, it is NOT your fault.
I would report it to an administrator, or your social worker at your school.
I cant even imagine what would happen if he did something so severe

In a way, it was really a good thing that you called home.

If you didn't, you might have never known that he was being abused.

OMG! There is a saying that you never know what your children go home to.

There is NO WAY that you could have known that this would be the outcome. You did the right thing. You followed all the proper steps that you are supposed to and required to take. Please do not feel bad. I know that it is hard and I would be sitting here beating myself up over it too but there is ABSOLUTELY no way you could know that his Mom was an abuser. You could have saved his life in the long run. My Mother works for CPS and you would not believe the stories I have heard over the years.

's to you!!! If you need a shoulder please feel free to FM me

I am not a teacher, but no way should you feel guilty and actually you should feel good because you might have stopped that child from getting more abused!!! It all depends on what the AP does.

I think everyone has said it best that in a way you have done this boy a favor. Try to take comfort in that and please don't feel guilty. Unfortunately, this probably isn't the first time this has happened to him but it may be the last.

I'm so sorry to hear this. ITA with the posters who say that at least you know about the abuse now. It is certainly a difficult situation.

I had a similar situation happen to me about 8 years ago, so I know exactly how you felt. My colleagues told me exactly what every else here told you, that you should not feel guilty. Obviously, there are major issues at home, which may explain why this student is acting out in class, and with your phone call, you have just brought these issues to light with the proper authorities. Hopefully, this students and his mother can receive the help they so desperately need.

You did your job and you should not feel guilty at all!

This seems like it was meant to be . . . You did your job as an educator, apparently this poor boy's mom isn't doing her job as a parent. If a child is disruptive in class, OF COURSE you should call home. The parent's job is to discuss why the behavior is inappropriate and to consequence the child accordingly~ Not to physically mishandle the child. This is not your fault, but maybe more of your blessing among this child. You helped this child in more ways than you realize, even though it may be difficult not to feel guilty.

I totally agree...there is a reason they make you take a child abuse seminar!!!

the only person who is at fault here is the mother...no wonder that he is acting up...its hard for him to see things now, but in years to come he will be grateful for what you did...

You did the right thing and now hopefully this family can get the help they need. The mother should take a parenting class.

i had a similar situation earlier this school year. the mother was called in by the school psychologist and they spoke about 'proper and improper' parenting techniques. i havent seen any signs of the abuse since then, but who really knows what's going on. i just know to be super vigilant with this child.

I am a teacher and I understand where you are coming from. Hopefully your school will take the proper steps and the social worker will keep a closer eye on the student. I am sure the student needs to talk to someone about what is going on at home and now he can open up.
