Teachers: I need your help!

Teachers: I need your help!

I am student teaching in a HS and am having a tough time making lessons last 40 min. Any words of wisdom? Subject is Economics. I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Are your lessons running short or over?

If they are running short, perhaps add some group work or a project to establish understanding at the end of the lesson or perhaps play a 'Jeopardy' style game.

If they are running over, its normal to have too much to jam into a lesson. I'd much rather have too much, than too little.

It's always hard to judge time, if the kids are into it, one point can take 20 minutes or there's times you can go through a lesson in no time (but be sure the kids understand).

You can also always review....

There should be tons to talk about with Economics now, no?

I would have them clip / print finance articles and present them for extra credit. Expecially global topics. There is only so much about laisse faire you can read about... let them discover whats going on across the pond. Let them tell you. See what they discover.

I feel like at the HS level - the business education doesn't prepare you for what you face in college at all. Presentations are key - make them get up and speak about stuff.

thats what I would do.

oh yeah - perhaps let them debate /discuss what the current administration is doing to our economy.

politics and economics are topics that influence eachother all the time. I also think that in HS - the subjects don't really affect eachother, but in life they do.

Math (actuarial science), economics, politics, government, accounting, history are all related. Open them up to that - I would have loved that.

the only subject that sadly doesn't fit is ethics.

I've been out of school for a really long time - so maybe I'm really off base.
