I need suggestions for first day/week activities to do with 6th graders. i am teaching English and Social Studies so, they can either relate to those two subjects or can just be general welcome back/ getting to know you activities. Thanks.

In the past I've had my students interview each other and write biographies on their partner. This helps them get to know someone in the class, you also get to teach them listening (interviewing) skills, and you get to see their writing right away. THen I have them present eachother to the class - and this allows you to get to know each kid better, and help them with presentation skills. This usually takes a week or two if you want them to do rough drafts/final drafts of their biographies. THen I post them around the room with pictures of the students on their biographies.
