I've been subbing, and it's hard for me to discipline them because I am a sub, I don't know their usual routine and rules and the district where I sub is a difficult one. I was thinking of making up my own set of rules and writing it on the board each morning. What do you think of that? If so, do you have some suggestions for the rules, rewards and consequences? Also, what do you do to get their attention? Sometimes I clap or turn the lights off, but still they are out of control!
Any help would be greatly appreciated girls!!!!!

Re: Teachers- need your help
I leave for my subs the district's removal forms as well as 2 loooooong essays.....one for gum chewing and one for behavior issues (which is just the school's rules).
I tell the sub to make them copy the essays in detention if they are acting up or chewing gum - they hate copying stuff!!! Plus, its just re-inforcing the rules they should already be following.
Maybe you could type up something along those lines to use
I also brought stickers/mini toys, puzzle pages, and other goodies with me when I subbed a few years ago. Bottom line is - subbing *****! Just get through the day any way you can.

Re: Teachers- need your help
I have been sub for the past 2 years for all grades K-12. I find the most effective thing useful for elementary level to be the 'Give Me 5' technique that I learned from grad 'school in Rochester. You start by saying 'give me five, four, three, two, one!' Give a few seconds extra between each number the first few times you do it ,then count faster. It seems to become a game of who can listen the fastest first. The first time I do this I announce, 'Give me five- means to stop talking Four means stop what you're doing, Three, eyes should all be on me, Two, you are ready to listen, One, means I am ready to give directions!
I used this technique upstate then tried it in schools down here when I moved back and found it more effective than what I was doing at first.

Maybe what you can do is have the students come up with class rules/consequences of their own for substitute teachers (guided by you of course)...then they are responsible for following them...they are more likely to follow something THEY created themselves. Good Luck.

Thank you for this idea! I'll try it this week. Right now, my kids are making me nuts, probably because I'm under more pressure than usual because our concerts are starting next week! I had thought in the beginning I showed them I meant business, but yeah...I probably am still too sweet anyway haha. First year teacher, here! I feel like all I do is yell lately just to get their attention- it never really was a problem before. Like I said, I have less patience these days cuz concert stress!!
