Teachers- need your help

Teachers- need your help

I've been subbing, and it's hard for me to discipline them because I am a sub, I don't know their usual routine and rules and the district where I sub is a difficult one. I was thinking of making up my own set of rules and writing it on the board each morning. What do you think of that? If so, do you have some suggestions for the rules, rewards and consequences? Also, what do you do to get their attention? Sometimes I clap or turn the lights off, but still they are out of control!

Any help would be greatly appreciated girls!!!!!

What's their age/grade?

Honestly, it's all or nothing. Set rules and enforce them. Reward them based on if they followed your rules (candy, extra free time, etc). Hope this helps!

Oh and assigning more homework is definitely a consequence they will not want

I would let them know inthe beginning what you are going to do to get their attention (clapping and having them copy, lights off-hands of their head, ringing a bell). I would use lots of stickers and praise the students who are doing the right thing.

Let them know that you are going to leave the teacher a note on whoever was not behaving.

be sure to let them know what the consequences are.

I'm not really sure you can do that. HW is not suppose to be a consequence.

I would definitely reward students for good behavior by praising them and possibly giving out things, like pencils- I am a no candy type of person- why hype them up on sugar!

Try to remember though that they are going to give you a hard time and they are going to test you, so mean what you say and do what you say! Good luck!!

No it's not, but having additional homework assigned to do is no picnic. Sorry, but no advice here. I'm a RN. Ask me about health, then I might be a little more helpful.

NEVER ever give out food!! besides allergies there is a new legislation that was passed and is being enacted that bans it. my district adopted it already.

basically, you need to be tough. don't make up rules and put them on the board. they will ignore them anyway. let them know you mean business.

no, you can't give HW as a consequence.

be tough. that's all there is to it. as you get to know the teachers' routines, you'll learn what they do. but kids know that with subs they can get away with murder. that's why you have to go in there strong. don't buy them with rewards; they'll come to expect them and you'll wind up spending all your $$$.

but food and HW are HUGE no-nos!! you could get in huge trouble with administration

In college, a professor told us you have to be the strict teacher in the beginning. If you start out strict, you can always relax. However, if you start out sweet, there is no way to turn strict! I use positive reinforcement..ex. I like how Jayna is sitting quietly waiting for directions, I like how Amanda is ready and looking at me...also, I always tell them that good behavior will earn them a reward at the end of the day, if they get three strikes they cannot earn the reward. The reward is always one of three simple games Good Morning Mr. Judge, Scrambled Eggs, or the ever classic 7-up! Good luck and HTH

I'm a Kindergarten teacher and I agree about not using food or HW...I like the game ideas...and definitely setting your rules up first thing in the morning and start complimenting kids right away who are doing the right thing...the others will come around! Subbing is really hard...I feel for you! Stickers are inexpensive and will work in the younger grades, and I like the idea of rewarding the whole class by spelling out a word on the board....each time you can compliment them, ie. they transitioned really well, are working nicely for a period of time, you can add a letter. then you can give them some extra recess, free time, games at the end of the day if they spell the word. They'll remember you the next time you are in their room, too. HTH
