Re: TEACHERS: observation help
A motivation is something to hook the audience....in an ELA lesson it could be reading a book that is related to the lesson. Anything that will motivate them to want to learn the concepts you are teaching.

reading a story and filling in a graphic organizer on characters and their traits

Re: TEACHERS: observation help
It could be, but if reading the story is the focus of your lesson then a motivation could be telling the class to think of their favorite character....then have them volunteer things that they liked about that character and you list them on chart paper...do that for a few minutes - that could be a possible motivation.

Re: TEACHERS: observation help
You could throw some kind of costume together and walk in as one of the characters from the story...that will definitely motivate them to here and do more!!
