Teachers on the board

During student teaching, were you able to work a part time job? Saya a few days a week or on the weekends?

wow you had time to make plan lessons and stff during that. Some schools make such a big deal about it like not allowing you to take any extra classes or even tell you to quit your job since this is considered a full time job.

I worked Fri sat sun nights while I student taught. It gave me weeknights to work on my lessons and other requirements of my program.

you do what you have to..and i'm anal about lesson plans-i do full, formal lesson plans for EVERY lesson i teach..so i mean 1 lesson with handouts can be anywhere from 1-10 pages..per class, per day

plus grading..

but again..you cope and look back and say hth did i do that

I worked Saturdays for a few hours and also took a grad class one night a week. It wasn't bad, I probably couldve handled more hours during the week.

I took 4 classes and student taught, but I didn't work. My parents were nice enough to pay my rent for 4 months though...

i think it really depends....it depends on what grade you're teaching, the teacher you work with, what your school expects from you and your commute time each day.

I only worked weekends at a retail store and I felt overwhelmed

Coming from a cooperating teacher ( I have had over a dozen student teachers). I would say that most of my student teachers did not work. Those that did were not as prepared and extremely overwhelmed, overworked and exhausted.

Student teaching is so overwhelming and I have had many teachers breakdown during the process that I would suggest if you don't have to, don't!

If it is a must then you have to do what you need to do but it is not recommended.

i should clarify i suppose--i do my best when im overworked..it's what im used to..i know you weren't responding to me, but i just want to clarify-i did really, really well with my student teaching..as i said full lesson plans, hour of extra help almost every day...and i had to attend staff meetings/department meetings, new teacher orientation-everything

and i never had a break down lol

Absolutly not referring to you. Just saying most people don't realize how hard teaching really is until they try it and if at all possible you shouldn't work because it is a full time job in itself and even more so when your new at it.

Good luck

My school did not allow us to take any classes while student teaching. I had to take a leave of absence from work because the hours conflicted. I am so glad that I only did student teaching and nothing else because I was overwhelmed as it was. I can't imagine having to go to school at night and work on the weekends. I think it depends on the person though. I get easily overwhelmed and disorganized when I have too much on my plate.

I didn't work but I worked full time during my two years in Grad school to save money AND lived at home with my parents. I lived off my savings from Jan.-may. Living with the parents was def. a plus!!

I know a lot of girls that worked part time jobs at night (20 hrs a week) and they seemed to manage it all.

I did. My job at a daycare was very flexible. Although I didn't work many hours, I had to save A LOT before hand.

When I did my student teaching I was very lucky with both the school and my jobs at the time. I was working at a hospital 20 hours per week and they let me be flexible with my hours I took 1 class besides my student teaching and worked at a restaurant on the weekends. However I was stretched a bit thin...but I would say that its doable and I managed fine...I was even offered a job at the school after I finished my student teaching there...
