I received my Initial Certification back in February 07. I know within the 5 years (which would be Feb 2011) you have to earn your permanent certificate you have to have your masters, and I heard you have to teach for 2 years.
started teaching last year but had to resign. So i heard that I cant teach for 2 years from the time I resign. Which means I cant teach the next school year either, right? SO I cant start teaching again ( i think) until Sept 2009. SO I'd be teaching the 09-10 school year, and the 10-11 school year.
My question is Since my 5 years would be up in Feb 2011, will I lost my initial certification because of the couple of months short I am of meeting the requirements? Or am I going to have to apply for an extension?
Thanks in advance!

You can't teach for 2 years from the time you resign? Really? Why? I've never heard that!

Was it in the city you went because they do something like that. If it is you can teach anywhere else.

Not really...you just have to provide a letter stating why you can not meet the requirements by the deadline they want. There is also a fee...I think it was like $50.

Re: Teachers- Permanent Certifcation ?
You should be able to teach in the public schools then on LI or any other place in New York State. The city is the only one that says you can't teach there for 2 years if you resign or don't take the position they give you. That is the recruitment office. You can teach on LI still.

Try calling the state ed department to get it all cleared up...It's always easiest when you speak to them directly. Their website is not easy to navigate and can be completely confusing/overwhelming.
I've never heard of not being able to teach if you resign but anything is possible...Either way good luck!

Re: Teachers- Permanent Certifcation ?
yeah thats def just a city thing..u can def teach anywhere else u want...its just their rule basically to prevent people from leaving, since they know it su cks! (i cant even tell u how many times i have wanted to resign but i cant cause i need the money) but im not positive but i think if u are a teachers assistant or a sub that could count towards your years...so i wouldnt worry and i heard extensions are really easy to get if it comes down to it
