Teachers- Permanent Certifcation ?

Original post by cherish83

I received my Initial Certification back in February 07. I know within the 5 years (which would be Feb 2011) you have to earn your permanent certificate you have to have your masters, and I heard you have to teach for 2 years.

started teaching last year but had to resign. So i heard that I cant teach for 2 years from the time I resign. Which means I cant teach the next school year either, right? SO I cant start teaching again ( i think) until Sept 2009. SO I'd be teaching the 09-10 school year, and the 10-11 school year.

My question is Since my 5 years would be up in Feb 2011, will I lost my initial certification because of the couple of months short I am of meeting the requirements? Or am I going to have to apply for an extension?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Teachers- Permanent Certifcation ?

i dont know about the resigning issue and not being able to work (if you cant teach can you sub???)

But yes you have to have your masters and have 2 years of teaching .

HOWEVER, YOU SAID YOU RECIEVED INITIAL CERTIFICATION - You CAN NOT get perminent certification anyway with an inital certification. You can only get Perm. if you have provissional

WIth initial you have to something like 150 Hours of prof develp etc, every 5 years, to maintain Professional certification (and you must do this EVERY 5 years) you no longer can get permenent!

I have provisional in my El ed certification - so i CAN get my permenent.
I have Initial for my Spec Ed certification - i can ONLY get professional.

thats the thing - im not sure because it is so new. I know when i worked at one school they used to give us a slip saying that we went. Maybe they can just sign something - i dont knowall the details. I havent applied for it because boces told me to wait because once i apply for professional i HAVE TO do the hours and i have 5 years before i need to have it so they said why do the hours any sooner than i have to. but if you call boces they may know what counts and what doesnt and what you need to show evidence

sorry hope that made sense - typing fast

You can't teach for 2 years from the time you resign? Really? Why? I've never heard that!

I dont know. I dont exactly remember why. I tried searching the BOE Website and I cant find anything.

You should definitely call Albany and ask.

I agree. That doesn't make sense, regardless of where you teach. The certification is state issued.
