Teachers, please help! I FINALLY have an interview!

Hi there, well, I finally got my first call back for an interview! It is for a leave replacement position, which I'm not sure if that means it is only for 3 months or one year, I guess it depends on how long the regular teacher takes for maternity leave, right??

So, ANYONE who can help with advice or what to expect at an interview, please please let me know, I already am so nervous and the interview isn't until Friday. I am worried about them asking me philosphical question about teaching and if I follow Lucy Caulkins approach and all that stuff...

Thanks in advance!!!

Always be prepared to tell them about yourself :)

Make sure you sound enthusastic about teaching... show off your portfolio if you have one...

I haven't interviewed in a while but i'm trying to think of questions I'd been asked...

How would I set up a classroom?

How would I teach reading?

Whats my favorite subject/grade to teach and why?

How do you approach slower learners? Fast learners?

If I think of anymore I'll let you know :)

Good luck- where is the interview?

Some questions I've been asked on interviews: If we walked past your room what would it look like or what would we see, how do you deal with behavior, why do you want to become a teacher, what was your favorite lesson that you taught and why, how do you run your classroom, meeting needs of diverse learners, teaching strategies you use, can't think of anything else right now.
I wish you lots of luck!!! I'm still searching for a teaching job too so I know how nervous you must feel.

Big Topics in my district:

NY State Standards

Dfferentiation

Intergreating Technology

What would you do with a child who is not doing their homework....

Parent Communication

Classroom Management System

Depending on the grade- but state test prep is a BIGGIE!

i have been on a few interviews lately and you hit the nail on the head.... i have been asked all of the same questions
do you work at Middle country?

a good interviewer will not ask you philisophical questions...they want to know how you will teach the kids
they may ask a lame question like What is your philosophy.. but this is your chance to let them know about you

ALSO....reading program

Classroom management, behavior modification!!! What do you do if the child is not doing homework.

Make sure you say to call the parents! (It must be a team approach yada yada yada)

Re: Teachers, please help! I FINALLY have an interview!

Having worked for middle country sd for 3 years and now in California for five where I do teacher interviews as the school counselor-

Dealing with the difficult student
Know your special ed laws including 504 plans
they may not ask but not everyone knows the answers so it will give you a leg up
NY standards
Dealing with the community- how you reach out to parents, involvement etc
Classroom management is crucial- have specifics ready
Why you wanted to become a teacher?ie not because you LOVE kids, standard answer
How will your classroom look on the first day of school, the last day?
Intergrating writing and reading across the curriculum
Technology in the classroom
Working as a team, how do you view your relationship with your colleagues?
Standarized testing
Hope this helps! Just be sure of yourself, most importantly!
And good luck!

Re: Teachers, please help! I FINALLY have an interview!

Thank you so much for all your help ladies!

One question about the classroom environment, do they want to hear about cooperative learning groups and centers already in place on the first day of school? Or are they looking to hear about how the room will be bright and cheery, etc...??

Also, in terms of standards, what would they ask? Would have to repeat a specific standard or just discuss how I would be meeting the standards throughout the year through different theme units?

Thanks!

By the way, the interview is in Manhasset, so any specific info from that district would be greatly appreciated!
