Teachers, should I take this job?

Teachers, should I take this job?

I was offered a permanent sub job in 2 different districts today. Both districts only pay about 105 a day with no benefits. I currently have a job as a TA and make $28,000 with benefits. The problem is that my principal passed me over for 2 classroom teacher openings in my school for teachers with more experience.

I have a great reputation at this school and I have been there for two years. I have gone above and beyond my responsibilities as a TA and it goes unnoticed. I'm not sure if my principal will ever help me get a job. My pay will be about 10,000 a year less if I take the permanent sub job. I would truly appreciate everybody's advice. Thank You!

To be honest, if you can live with the pay cut, I would take the perm. sub job. I know my district hires permanent subs (me being an example)....the pay ***** but it is actual teaching experience which I feel like is very important. It is also something to add to your resume. I found that the best benefit of being a perm. sub was being able to be in the classroom with different teachers and learning from them - that was invaluable to me and helps me everyday in my classroom. Also, if there are any pregnant teachers, etc.then you will most likely get that position. Good luck!

I have to agree....

It sounds like your current school doesn't deserve to have you anymore...they've had multiple opportunities to hire you full time and they've passed you over. It's time for a change - perhaps that new school will appreciate you more!! You may have to take a pay cut right now, but if that translates to a permanent position next year (or even a leave replacement this year), the temporary cut will be worth it. Best of luck!

I agree.... If you can live on the lower salary then I would take it. You have a better chance of gaining more experience and possibly taking over a leave replacement. You may find more opportunity for growth in a new district. I know from some friends of mine that were TA's for a few years that the principals only saw them as an assistant and they were passed over for jobs.

Good Luck!!!!!

I would stay put. The time as a TA does count toward paying in to the retirement system, benefits are worth a lot of $$ by themselves, paying COBRA costs is astronomical for interim coverage. I'd hang in there, you have a foot in the door, I started as a TA in my district and am currently on my second 1 year leave replacement. JMO. Have you been granted interviews for the positions you've been denied?

I was interviewed for the kindergarten position, I made it to the assistant superintendents. They hired a perm sub that has been in the district for 6 years. The second position was for a fifth grade position and I'm not being interviewed for that because my principal told me she sees me as a primary teacher.

I will be covered under my FH's insurance once we are married. I am debating whether or not to stay in my current job for one more year because of that. This is such an expensive year for us because of the wedding and I'm in school getting my spec. ed certification. I just don't want to waste any more time at this school if I'm never going to get a teaching position. I am supposed to make my decision in 2 days and I'm still not sure what is the right thing to do.

Janatlantica, how long were you a TA before you got a leave replacement?

I really dont know. I worked part time for a district one year and after paying insurance I barely took home anything.

But that was my IN into the district. So if you could take a major paycut then yes Id move to whichever district has someone retiring soon. Investigate!
