I am thinking about getting my reading certification maybe in September..I think this will make me more marketable ...I have my Masters in Elem Ed
How long do you think a read cert will take??
Any advice on where to go for it??

Re: Teachers who are dual certified...
I did mine in 2 full years while working. It was tough. I did it through the TOP (Teaching Opportunity Program) in NYC, so it was free. Our classes were at CCNY, and though CCNY does not have the best rep, I found the program surprisingly rigorous. But I learned a lot.

Re: Teachers who are dual certified...
I am dually certified in Elementary and Special Education. It definitely makes you more marketable as a professional. I did all of my ed classes on a graduate level working on the two certs at the same time at Hofstra. I would imagine that they have a reading program as well. If you work for the Bd. of Ed., they may have some form of tuition reimbursement. I'd check that out - it could save you money - the only disadvantage being you owe time to the city. If you plan on teaching in NY, it really doesn't matter where you get your Master's from as long as you have one. My sister went Ivy at Colombia Teacher's College and we work in the same place.

Well the thing is...I think I may not be working for the good old BOE in September..I will probably be quitting.
My plan is if I don't get a teaching job...then I will try and get a teaching assistant job and then do the reading certification...but if I am teaching I most likely will not

I have a dual certification...elem and special ed. It took me two years (at night since i worked full time) to get it. Also...I had to student teach over the summer for my special ed degree and a friend of mine that got her literacy cer. had to do a certain number of hours in reading clinics (they ran them at Adelphi) so its not just classes that you have o take and prepare for. It's worth it though!

Re: Teachers who are dual certified...
Next week I will be done with my reading degree. I think it's worth it bc I have gotten so many more job interviews this year than last year. Also I have gotten interviews for both certification areas. And when I go on interviews I always play up the reading aspect and I tend to get lots of questions about how I can use reading to teach social studies (my other certification). Oh it has taken me 2 years going part time 36 credits (upstate).

Lehman college has a great program - I got mine through them and they are reasonably priced.

Kathleen, I'm considering the same thing b/c not much need for ECE at all! Yet I just got my Masters & not looking forward to even more school, especially w/ so much going on with the wedding coming up & such.
