I just completed my Masters in Early Childhood in February and have been working at a Catholic school for 3 years. Now that I have my Masters & now that I'm living in Suffolk & we're saving for a house, etc., 30k just isn't going to cut it (esp. after having worked in corporate for 10 yrs).
I'm seeing that my MS in ECE is just not going to cut it.
How do you go about getting certified in a 2nd area or 'with a concentration in math or science' as they say?
To get a 2nd Masters in Education but a different subject area, how hard is it?
Who's doing it?
Thx so much.

Re: Teachers...Q: 2nd Masters/2nd Cert?
My Masters is in special education. My program of study at Hofstra was in the special education department but led towards dual certification in elementary AND special education. In other words, I have ONE masters and two licenses. You should not need a second Masters. I would go to the college you wish to attend and ask them how many classes you would need in order to qualify for a license/certificate in another area. If the certificate you seek is completely unrelated to education, THEN you may need a second masters degree but you shouldn't for another education license.

You should just be able to take classes in an area that you're interested in.
I'd really suggest special ed, or ESL. There will be an increasing demand for people who are certified in ESL.

don't do a 2nd masters unless you have to - i have one in public policy and am finishing up my eled one.....but i can never tell anyone about my origianl masters pretty much....no-one wants to hire someone and pay them more off the back for 2 masters......its more fiscally responsible to take someone with one masters, or even a bachelor's in that case.....just my two cents, go for another ceritifcation if you want, but not another masters!!

Thank you ladies for the info.
To get a 2nd certification, say in ESL, how do you go about that? Is it just a matter of taking the CST?

every certification has different requirements... check out the NYState education site... or contact a boces... they should be able to tell you exactly what you need...

You have to take classes specific to the certification that you would like to get. My friend just got her Literacy certification (already has elem ed certification and masters but did not want a second masters) and it think it was something like 30 credits.
