Re: Teaching Fellows Programs on LI?

I don't know of any, but I think you may be able to get some student loans forgiveness if you work with students with disabiities or in some schools with low-income students, and also Head Start programs. There is some information about it on a website. I'll try to remember where I saw it.

Re: Teaching Fellows Programs on LI?

Thanks! I'm thinking about applying for the NYC program, but it said that most fellows are placed in the Bronx, which makes me really nervous. My FFIL and a girl I used to work with were both beaten up by their students in Bronx schools, and now I'm totally freaked out by the thought of teaching there.

Re: Teaching Fellows Programs on LI?

I taught in Freeport my first year back in NY and was awarded an amount of $$ at the end of the school year. It was through a special grant awarded to the district to lure in new teachers. (I didnt know at my time of hire, so it was a nice bonus) I know some other districts have/do offer something similiar, but Im not sure how that compares to what you were talking about with the city schools.

Re: Teaching Fellows Programs on LI?

The fellows program allows people who have degrees in areas other than education to teach and work on a masters in ed and get certified.

But from what I understand, the only way I can teach on LI before I get my certification is to go to a private school, and I just can't afford to take that kind of salary cut.

Re: Teaching Fellows Programs on LI?

I think you can only qualify for the loan forgiveness program in NYC if you work in a SURR school. A SURR school is an underachieving school that is hard to staff. There may be some info. on the teachny website, but I'm not really sure about how it works on LI.
