Has anyone had their teeth professionally whitened? I went this morning to have my 2 canines done and my gums are KILLING ME! They are sooo sensitive!!!! Is this normal?? I can't believe how much of a difference I see already, but my dentist wants me to go back for another visit next week but if its going to hurt like this, IM NOT GOING!

Re: TEETH WHITENING QUESTION
i work for a dentist, it's normal to have sensitive teeth from whitening especially if you have sensitive teeth to begin with. did you have the light or the trays done? if you want to maintain the whiteness you have to go back the second time. i'm afraid to even have my teeth whitened because they make your teeth brittle and you might end up with more problems in the long run.

Re: TEETH WHITENING QUESTION
I was going to get it done but the doctor told me that I would probably be in total agony because my gums are sensitive. He said that he has had patients cry for hours in pain. That was all he had to say to me. I never considered it again.

wow i never heard of that, usually in order to find out if your a canidate they ask u if you have sensitive teeth to begin with, maybe those patients lied because they wanted it done so badly.

Re: TEETH WHITENING QUESTION
I did it... they were a little sensitive right after it was done and the day after but after that I was fine.
It was more 'uncomfortable' really then pain.

Re: TEETH WHITENING QUESTION
i heard the whitestrips work decent too, but just like the regular bleaching they can mess up your teeth.

Re: TEETH WHITENING QUESTION
I had Brite Smile done and it really hurt but they came out super white. They are not as white now--3 months later--but I'm doing the Crest Whitestrips to maintain. Yes...the pain would come in pangs, literally! It hurt.

I had the bleaching with the light done. It was only to two of my teeth because my front 4 are implants and I wanted the ones on the sides brightened up a bit. I dread going back next week. Only one of them hurts and I think its because the root of the gum is exposed a little and she used something to cover the gum (something blue) and she scraped it a little when she was taking it off. I almost bit her finger off
eta... i also asked my dentist and he said that the stuff you buy in the store does work, you just have to keep doing it (which is fine with me, better than this pain!) I have the rembrant pen which I will use if/when the whiteness dulls again.

I had no idea that whitening could be painful! I've been wanting to get it down, but now I'm not so sure if I want to.

Well one tooth is fine and the other hurts. I think its mainly because the root is exposed a little because my gum receded in that area. The procedure itself was not painful at all.

Woooooo wait a minute, getting your teeth whitened does NOT make your teeth brittle and end up with more problems- if you work in a dental office you should know that- Reports say that if you are going to be EXCESSIVE meaning everyday 3x a day then yes you can and its not in every instance either- but to have your teeth whitened and then to touch up is NOT going to ruin your teeth!!!!

Re: TEETH WHITENING QUESTION
For those with sensitive teeth. Depending on the degree of sensitivity you should prior to whitening rinse with a fluoride rinse for at least a week 1x a day. You can find at pharmacy- ACT is a popular one. If your teeth are super sensitive- every time you drink something cold you feel pain in your teeth you should ask your dentist for a prescription toothpaste called colgate prevident 5000, its regular toothpaste with extra fluoride. You could also use sensodyne but the bad thing is after you use it and go back to regular toothpaste you will feel the sensitivity again. Your dentist can also provide you with a fluoride gel that you can put right onto those areas of exposed root tissue( recession) also your hygienist or dentist should tell you - if you have recession another term is tooth brush abrasion- YOU are causing it by the way you are brushing so you should be using an electric or battery operated toothbrush. The gum tissue DOES NOT grow back! so it is sooo important to stop the progression. The other way recession is caused is by perio disease but the MAIN factor is the way you have been brushing for years. If you dont want to go and get the RX for the toothpaste you can also use baking soda to brush onto those areas to help with the sensitivity. And yes bleaching can make your teeth sensitive if you go in cold turkey- Preparing them with the fluoride rinse will eliminate that feeling. Good Luck and dont be afraid to have your teeth whitened . Its an easy tool to brighten up your smile!
