For those with sensitive teeth. Depending on the degree of sensitivity you should prior to whitening rinse with a fluoride rinse for at least a week 1x a day. You can find at pharmacy- ACT is a popular one. If your teeth are super sensitive- every time you drink something cold you feel pain in your teeth you should ask your dentist for a prescription toothpaste called colgate prevident 5000, its regular toothpaste with extra fluoride. You could also use sensodyne but the bad thing is after you use it and go back to regular toothpaste you will feel the sensitivity again. Your dentist can also provide you with a fluoride gel that you can put right onto those areas of exposed root tissue( recession) also your hygienist or dentist should tell you - if you have recession another term is tooth brush abrasion- YOU are causing it by the way you are brushing so you should be using an electric or battery operated toothbrush. The gum tissue DOES NOT grow back! so it is sooo important to stop the progression. The other way recession is caused is by perio disease but the MAIN factor is the way you have been brushing for years.
If you dont want to go and get the RX for the toothpaste you can also use baking soda to brush onto those areas to help with the sensitivity.
And yes bleaching can make your teeth sensitive if you go in cold turkey- Preparing them with the fluoride rinse will eliminate that feeling.
Good Luck and dont be afraid to have your teeth whitened . Its an easy tool to brighten up your smile!

WOW...sounds like you have alot of info on this subject!! thanks! I never knew that HOW you brush your teeth can affect your gum tissue growth...

don't even ask how long it's been seen i've seen a dentist!! I'm absolutely terrified of dentists!!

oh, your very welcome. I am a Registered Dental Hygienist and attend many many CEU ( continuing ed courses to maintain my license) and you'd be surprised with the info out there.
Jandt2006- Be careful what you read on eopinions or any website if its not medical or dental approved you never know and will be misinformed. The rinse is a fluoride rinse the popular one is ACT. its OTC same aisle as listerine. And no please stop saying it ruins your teeth- and the concentration is carbamide peroxide or like britesmile the gel is 5.6 % hydrogen peroxide!! Its NOT BLEACH!!!!!! Its called bleaching b/c it gives the white/clean/bright affect.

Another issue on listerine the ADA says if you feel it burning- not good dilute it by 1 cap of listerine to 4 caps of water!!! and no it will not alter its function.

Too strong for your oral tissues, and if you are a smoker do not use ANY mouth rinses with alcohol. the burning sensation damages over time the tissue in your mouth. Remember how listerine used to have those commercials that its just as good as flossing? the ADA forced them to remove it b/c its not true- but listerine will not tell you about the damage the alcohol content can do to the mouth. Everyone has different sensations in the mouth some are not even bothered by it so that is why they are not forced to provide that info, where others like me I cant use it , it hurts way too much. If you are using it for your gums ( to help prevent gum disease) use the natural dentist rinse. If you are using it for fresh breath use the strips instead.

No, I'm not a smoker. Guess I never thought to read the ingredients in it...the alcohol content is what's doing it then... The natural dentist rinse you're referring to...is there something available OTC. (i know you mentioned ACT..but that's for extra flouride right?? AGAIN, thanks for the info.

Yup the natural dentist is OTC too, its hard to find patients have told me- I know the health food stores have it and I believe a pt. just told me they found it at walbaums. Yup its the alcohol content. oh forgot to add yes the fluoride rinse ACT is different if you rinse with both the ACT is the LAST one you rinse with!
