This was just last night, my gma called my mom and asked if I was wearing a gown and veil (I originally planned not to). We are getting married at the reception hall since we are of different religions and aren't going to bother converting, well my gma says, ' When I picture a bride in a gown and veil, it's ONLY in a church!' Really?! What about the Jewish brides who get married in temple?! Do they walk down the isle nekkid?!

Someone said to my husband, 'Well this is your FIRST marriage, so I guess you do want the reception.' No offense to anyone whose marriage didn't last, but can I at least ENTER my marriage thinking it is forever????

'why are you doing this so early? you have so much time' FMIL referring to when I got my veil, when I ordered invitations, etc

This really irked me:

Everyone kept asking if we had set a date the day after we got engaged etc. Then when we set the date people were like oh wow you're doing this fast!!

(By the way we got engaged Nov 6th 2004 and are getting married Nov 4, 2005-I dont think that is too fast)

'You could buy a house for that much money'
(Thanks, as if I hadn't thought of that myself!)

And any time I've tried to share any information with my FMIL, the unenthusiastic, 'Oh, that's nice.'

this is me too, she's a pleasure

Budget - I hate that word, especially when I'm reminded that I can't have something I want because it's not in my 'budget'.

What a great thread........I get so much of what I call 'pressure disguised as advice.'

Here are just a few things I have heard:

Why don't you get married at the place where I got married? (Do they really want to know my reasons for not picking the same place).

Or, someone asks if I if I will wear my hair up. I say NO and they start telling me that a bride must wear her hair up. (Mine will be partially up).

I always tell my family that I do not want to hear any sentence that starts out, 'If I were you, I'd...........'

I agree with you ladies...

I HATE the term bridezilla

I HATE when people comment on everything else we could be doing with this money and how it is a waste ....it isn't a waste to me ....so shhhhhh!!!

I HATE when I mention little extras I want to do...like the votive placecards...and individual menus...and people tell me not to waste my time....nobody cares about those things...UM, it is my wedding...I CARE!!!

I HATE when people tell us things we HAVE to do at our ceremony/reception....it is our wedding...we will be the ones to decide what we HAVE to do!!!

And the craziest thing that has been said to me since I have been engaged was by some random lady who noticed my engagement ring while we were in line at Macy's and started commenting on weddings...

'Enjoy it...your FIRST wedding is always the best'

I am hoping this is my ONLY!

Where do these people come from???

What about when one person says, 'you should have an engagement party.' Then another person says, 'an engagement party is a waste of time and money.' And we are all in the same room and I don't feel like disagreeing with either of them.

AND--when I tell people that I want to be married in November they ask, 'this November???' as if that is too soon.

My FH and I are both Jewish, but I have noticed that interfaith couples get TONS of insensitive comments about how to handle the wedding.

One of my BMs keeps reminding me that people are so opinionated because they care and that they give their opinion to try to help, but boy it can be annoying.

OMG, yes, this is sooo annoying. For the first 2 weeks, I had stupid conversations like this:
'So, when is the big day?'
'I don't know yet. '
'Well, why haven't you set a day yet.'
'Well gee, I don't know, maybe because I just got engaged A FEW DAYS AGO, I really don't know.'
And everytime I would say it's probably going to be sometime in 2006, people would go ballistic on me and why am I waiting so long, etc. The minute I set the actual date and picked the hall, they are all like, 'oh that's so nice. That gives you plenty of time to plan and save up your money.' Really, I never thought about it that way!?! Sorry, had to vent ladies!!!
