Terror Threat Level RAISED again!!

Great just in time for Christmas

I never pay attention to these things

FI works for a counter terrorist organization in the department of homeland security so if their is ever a threat he'll be the first to know.

I don't understand the point of that terror level thing. They raise it and then tell not to change any of your travel plans, go on with your life, etc. To me, it just seems like a way for them to cover their butts in case something does happen, while freaking out the easily freaked out.

thats how I take it 'CYA' I also think as the election comes near...they are going to tell us how great Bush was for setting up this cabinet position and this plan...

technically New York has been at Level Orange since 9/11 and have NEVER been changed to Yellow.

For the rest of the country its a raise in level. I hate to say this... but it's like the same ol same ol for us. *sigh*

I dont pay attention to this anymore. Every time a holiday comes, they threaten more attacks. I think people are becoming immune to it by now. If they are going to attack they are not going to be able to stop it anyway IMO.

It sucks! My brother who is on active duty with the National Guard will not be home for Christmas and doesn't know if his leave request will be honored for my e-party on January 2nd

As Veronica said, raising the terror level doesn't effect us in NY because we have never been below Orange since 9-11 and personally I think we should even be higher. I don't think we can ever be complacient again like we were prior.

I'm sure it'll be fine as it has in the past. I love how they scare the c r a p outta you with all these speculations and then say 'Don't let this alter your holiday plans' I HATE the media. it's so sad and horrible to say, but this has become the norm & NYC has been @ level orange since that horrid day anyway.

I always wanted to ask. If on 9/11 someone said we were at an elevated level or risk for terrorism what would have gone differently. From what I've seen of those around me lately, not a single thing.

People were very aware of their surroundings shortly after 9/11, now no one cares. Bags get left behind and people walk by them without a glance. Strangers stare long and hard at people in curiously unfriendly ways and everyone says 'hey, its New York'. No one really cares anymore. They elevate the threat level and people have a few different reactions:

Fear (as if they never thought we were under threat before in our lives.)

Apathy (I mean who cares right? It's like a fire drill in your office)

Extreme (starts to stock up supplies and ammo)

It's odd for me to see. I grew up in the Military and Dad did some stuff we were never allowed to know about. I've always been very aware of my surroundings. Moving to New York I was shocked how many people walk around as if they are living in their own worlds and nothing else matters. After 9/11 people starting taking notice of who was who and where. Now... it's just so lax.

Sad that it has to be raised Nationally for those Locally to realize we've been Orange since 9/11.

I work in the City and near a trophy site. (Trophy sites/buildings were used to name buildings or areas of high terrorism attractiveness) It's not that I don't care. If it's your time to go it's your time to go. Be it a car accident, an airplane coming through your building, a heart attack or a random sucide bombing. The only thing you can do is be smart and try to not make yourself an easy target. Keep your escape options open and be aware of what's going on and what you need to do to be safe.

Other countries have far higher terrorism issues than we do and those citizens have learned to live on with their lives. They are just more aware than we are. We've been so lucky for so long. Now we have to learn this stuff the hard way.

As others have said, NY has always been orange and will remain so for many years to come I beleive.

The whole issue of raising the threat level is not for the average american citizen but for the police, government agencies, etc. It is for them to raise their activities to the next level whether it be add more staff, patrol more areas, search more bags etc.

IMO the media should not be reporting the threat levels unless we go to code red and there is an immediate danger. There is nothing an average american can do and announcing the codes every time the new is on just causes undo panic. What the media should be focusing on is tips on keeping america safe....reporting unusual activities, giving the number for anti-terrorism hotlines, making sure you never leave your bags unattended, etc.

I think reminders to be aware of and to report things that don't look right is good but there is nothing we can really do regardless of the level of alert.

The media will always beat everything to death! DH was watching fox news yesterday and this story rotated with the time magazine people of the year and Michael Jackson's coming home party.

Israeli's live on Red alert every single day of their lives. Every single time they take a bus, stand waiting for a bus, walk into a grocery store, a pizzeria, a fruit market. Every single day, for the last 40 years, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Iraqi children have had bombs landing a few feet from their homes for the last year. (Sometimes missing and hitting their homes).

I will take the 'Orange alert' and go about my business with one eye on the guy next to me and the other eye on the holiday season.

But they caught Sadam we are safer now, why should they be raising the terror level. What was that a false statement?? We are safer now as Americans with him captured. This terror level being raised does not affect me one bit. There are people in other parts of the world that live on red 24/7/365. Life goes on.

Partly true but they predict that people will retaliate due to the capture of Sadaam. Especially regarding the fact that he was taken alive...it's an embarassment to his supporters and they predict that they will strike to redeem their violent reputation.

That being said, the threat level is not meant for us to hinder our day to day activities. It is meant to alarm police, government agencies etc...

Yes, we should be more alert, and more aware of our surroundings...but really, that's all we can do.
