I heard on the radio early this morning that they think al-quieda (sp?) may have helped out. Nobody had claimed it yet. They are going to investigate. Has someone claimed it since?
I think Bush (administration) automatically put al-qaida on it...to keep the fear level up...IMHO
although Eta has normally only targeted politicians...it is out of the norm for them to attack so many

That makes sense that Bush would do that. Makes you think.

Jamie...DH is useless...he has no opinion...so I am going to call MIL and ask her...but she is a pretty strong conservative...and still credits Franco for a great Spain
funny thing is my ex-boyfriend's was born in Cuba and then they fled to Spain because of Castro. If you talk to his mother she will tell you what an awful horrible man Castro was but that Franco was a saint.
To me, they are the same, if anything Franco was worse and far more violent and really lowered Spain on the cultural arts level but to each is own. She talks about working nights and being safe walking in the streets at 3am and that there was no graffatti to be seen anywhere.
But if I remember correctly this has been going on with the Basques since Franco's death in 71 if not before hand.

DH's aunt says that all the time!!! The streets were never so clean as they were under Franco...and that you could walk around without fear... unless you had an opposing opinion...
but DH's family were Franco supporters...his grandfather guarded his tomb and his mom sang at his 'inaugaration' whatever it was called...
eta started in the late 60s I think...and killed francos successor...franco died in 75 ot 76 though? b.c I know that DH lived in Spain under Franco (they moved back to Spain in 74)

Wow thanks for all the info. My mom is planning a trip to Spain and was just talking about this to me. She confused the BATH with Basques...glad I could straighten her out! (Since she gets her news from 770 talk radio it's hard to talk sence into her sometimes!) Of course its alquaida...boogyman politics!

I just saw this on CNN's website:
Spanish interior minister says new line of Madrid blast investigation opened after police find van with detonators and Arabic-language tapes. Details soon.

Re: Terrorist attack in Spain
don't forget that Spain has a huge Moorish (arab) population...although I wouldn't rule al Qaida out
Jamie: this is from MIL:
Its impossible for them to form their own nation - if you give it to the Basques that Catalans will want it as well...Spain is a very small nation and it would be broken up. Also 70% of the Basques want to be part of Spain...its only a radical minority...
Edited to add this quote: 'WHat a horror' said the Basque regional president, Juan Jose Ibarretxe, who insisted that ETA does not represent the Basque people. 'When ETA attacks, the Basque heart breaks into a thousand pieces.'

Re: Terrorist attack in Spain
Wow Erica thanks for the info. from your MIL. I forgot about the Catalon region. We have so many teachers from so many countries in my department 2 that are or studied in Spain, so I have relaxed my knowledge of Spain and concentrated on Costa Rica and Central America since we seem to be lacking on member from that area, so I am the 'Costa Rica' expert of my department.--LOL (not much of an expert though, history was never my thing)
It is Al-quida and it is possible, as you said with the huge Moorish influence. It is tragic no matter who did it.
Should we have an esperanto debate instead--lol! I do that one with the kids all the time.

Re: Terrorist attack in Spain
It was a language created to unite the world with one language it had a little bit of every language in it. It never took off. As I try to explain to my students people didn't want to lose their culture by having to give up their language. The usual comment I get from them is well why can't everyone speak English, then I tell them well why can't everyone speak Spanish, Chinese or Japanese. Then we usually go into a discusion of how would they feel if they could only speak English at home and everything else outside of their home was in a language other than English. It is really interesting to hear their thoughts on it and how the students views have changed in the 8 years that I have been there.

why take their language from them? that is not right. people get so desperate. now 200 people are dead and those 200 people most likely had NOTHING to do with this fight....
this is one of the reasons I am afraid of the commute into NYC- it is too easy. bombing a train is not rocket science.

Re: Terrorist attack in Spain
As of right now, they are saying it was Al Quidea (sp?) not this group!
And from what I understand that group of people do speak some old langauge that no other group speaks and the Spanish gov't has forbidden them to teach it in their schools. Am I misinformed?

I just heard this too. I caught the tail end of them quoting some mental case that said 'Plans for a major attack on America is 90% complete.' lovely to hear right before bed--i hate the news.

My poor boss- chances of me on the LIRR for a while are now slim to none....I am just not one of those 'what will happen, will happen' kinda gals.
