OMG - we just got off the phone with DH's grandmother...this happened 2 blocks away from his cousins apartment!!!
Eta is a separist group that has been terrorising Spain for many years now...as a matter of fact - when ever we visit there is always a small attack by them

In all seriousness Erica I hope that they are OK! But this has been going on for so many years I will never understand why Spain won't let them just go or at least part of the region? To have to like with the constant free from these crazies is so scary. They don't want to be part of Spain ,buh bye good luck trying to make it on your own.

yes - we know all of his immediate family is OK...he is going to call his cousin later (after things settle) b/c his grandmother thinks some of his friends may be hurt
Jamie...I think that sometimes about the Basques too...let them go...but a country just can't let part go so easily...then everyone wants to break off...like the Civil War here...

Re: Terrorist attack in Spain
Good point. But the Basques from my understanding seem to breed onto their own. Their language has no know root. They do not think the same as other Spainards and they just don't want to be in Spain. I have never heard this from the other regions or from my friends from the other reasons. You would know better than me, but what have you heard from the his family her, do they think they should hold onto the region or let it go? I know my friends and collegues are torn on this but everytime we hear about this stuff they say let them go already.

I wish I understood Spanish better...b/c they are always getting into political debates in his family...but I usually have no idea whats being said...
I'm going to ask DH about this...
I know last summer his mother was glued to the madrid city debates (just city officials) and was yelling at the television...it was like a soap opera for her

Re: Terrorist attack in Spain
The first thing that came to my mind this morning when I heard is I hope Johns family is all ok!!
yes - national elections are in 3 days...that more than anything tells me it is Basque movement (Eta) not al quaida...although they could have helped...
the Northern region of Spain has wanted to secede for awhile now...and recently their party was banned from Spanish government - b/c they did not condemn Eta...
Jamie...DH is useless...he has no opinion...so I am going to call MIL and ask her...but she is a pretty strong conservative...and still credits Franco for a great Spain

THis is such horrible news - i am so worried- becuase I am going to Spain this summer - Its so horrible that Spain has this terrorist turmoil. A lot of European Countries do - but when consequences like this occur - it so saddening!

This is horrible!
I heard on the radio early this morning that they think al-quieda (sp?) may have helped out. Nobody had claimed it yet. They are going to investigate. Has someone claimed it since?
