Terry Schiavo Feeding Tube Removed

Original post by lullabella

I am so torn over this one. I feel for both her husband and her family. If she told her husband she would not want to live this way then why did he wait 8 years to petition for removal of her feeding tube? I just think it is a horrible way to die, this poor woman suffered so much.

TO all the people that think she should be kept on the tube...
answer this:

WHO IS GOING TO TAKE CARE OF HER WHEN HER PARENTS ARE GONE?

Her siblings? ..That is not a life for anyone!

But, she isn't the only person in this predicament. What should we do with all of the other people who will need care after their parents are gone?

SUE....I WORK everyday with people in this situation...I KNOW first hand what it is like!

My uncle is in florida who has TBI it is NO LIFE YOU want to live!

Selfishly,
I also want the husband to have the final say, because if the courts step in and start saying my spouse doesn't have final say I am going to be pissed off. Unfortunatly, this case is about much much more than just Terri

But sue...in the end...she is like this...she isn't going to get much better if that.

I know i for one would not want to live my life like that...

and the truth be known, although the family is well intentions and maybe the husband isn't....it is time for her to go...

IMO it is CRUEL to keep her the way she is...AND she isn't going to get much better...THIS IS A FACT

I work with TBI patients and it is a sad sad life...and that is someone who is BETTER off than this woman

SO i guess i don't care what the persons motives are..who is making the decision...she has NO real quality of life now...she never will

AND i don't think any of you would want to switch places with her!

I think if we were in her shoes we would want to be let go and EVERYONE move on with their lives!

See- to me, the brain is a mystical and magical place- we have NO IDEA what is going on in there or in the TBI patients you work with...

I think she should be cared for, like any person that is ill, to the best of anyone's ability and they should pass naturally .

It just breaks my heart- to see those videos with her mother- while it might not be a 'regular' life I think it's dangerous to say that there is no quality of life just because she isn't like me or you- that is a very dangerous assumption and not an easy one to make.

Just because there is no one to take care of her doesn't mean she should die. There are plenty of orphans out there with no one to take care of them, should we kill them? Or all the animals in shelters that we kill because there is no one to take care of them... is that right?

you are joking right

You cannot compare the situation...I KNOW what she is in for...I KNOW the florida system...They have VERY BAD institiutions...where SHE WOULD be placed when her parents pass on...
If i were a cat in a pound i would rather DIE!

so, does that mean we should change or level of care or just let everyone die?

Ummm had medical intervention NOT happened in the first place she would have passed naturally.
The first wrong step was the tube being put in her in the first place.

All I can say is that EVERYTIME we see this on TV it reminds me to put in CLEAR writing my wishes.

That and I always look at Jim and clearly remind him ..

God help me, do NOT allow me to stay on a tube for more than a year.

If I had ANY mental capacity and I was this woman I'd hate my life so very much and worse, I couldnt even end it.

I feel for both sides. But enough is enough. Its so sad! She's not some sort of toy to disconnect and reconnect at will. It's terrible!

And another thing.. NO the supreme court should NOT step in.... how many others die this way and get no 'press' like this?

sassy would you want to live your life like that...

The brain is a mysterious thing...should we keep everyone alive in comas?

You really don't know what you are tlaking about (and i am not saying that to be mean) i have A LOT of experience in this field and i am telling you...she should be let go!

NO this isn't quality of life...sitting in a bed responding to music IS NOT quality of life...and you know it

I would want to be kept alive and I would want some type of therapy... I mean, look at Chris Reeve- he was actually getting movement in his toes with therapy and they said it would/could never happen.. I think it's a shame that they didn't even try on this woman...

As someone who works in a nursing home and is around these types of patients all the time I am glad this issue is finally resolved. There is no quality of life and I have seen too many feeding tubes inserted for the selfishness of the family. It only prolongs the patients suffering.

I am not too into the case, but how long were they married? I think that makes a difference too. Let's say I was dating someone a year, got married and the day after was in the position she was in. I feel like my parents know more about my life than my then husband. However, if they were married 15 years that would be different. I love my husband but I feel like that would be a tough tough decision so early on in our marriage and his relationship with me. Would he really know what I want?

she will never be even at his level..that is a fact..there was too much brain damage that occurred and Terry do not have the means to live ike he did, get the care that he did

Like i said...you really don't undertand the REAL process of this all..And it is sad...

If she is kept alive and her parents pass on...i would feel VERY bad for her

The husband isn't remarried, but he lives with a woman and they have 2 children together.

He's also insisting on a cremation (instead of a burial)

And, her parents have asked that she be allowed to die at home, but he won't allow it.

No, I certainly wouldn't want to be in Terri's situation, but I do believe that more can be done to help HER (I'm not saying every brain-injured person), but I do believe that more can be done to help Terri.

IMO, if something happens to me and 15 years later, John is shacked up with someone and has 2 kids, I want my MOM to be responsible for my care and decision- not John....let me go notebook this thread now...

I don't know. I guess my point is that I REALLY think Terri would have wanted her mother to be making her decisions, not the husband- at least not after he had 2 children with another woman. Maybe that's why I feel so strongly against the outcome. I don't think it should be the husband's decision.

And, I am sure that if the parents were going to be responsible for Terri, they would make private arrangements for her to be cared for after they are gone.

Sue...they are not rich...they don't have the means to take care of her...this is much bigger than you realize

and by seeing all that is going on...i really do not think she would want her parents to keep her like this...look how long it has been already...no miracles..and there won't be any time in the near future

I hope the decision stays this time. She should never have had to 'live' this way for 15 years against her wishes.
This makes me want to stop putting off having a living will made up. I would never want my family to stop my DH from following through with my wishes and visa versa.

I couldn't agree more.
I'm sorry but that is not life and I am sure she would be mortified if she 'knew' she was being forced to live this way.

This doesn't look like someone who's truly in a 'vegatitive state'

and, isn't there a LOT of evidence that the husband was abusive to her? In that case, I don't think the husband should be the decision maker

The power of media manipulation.
If you watch anything with her live she is in a vegetative state.
If it were me I would rather be dead than live like that because it's not living.
