Terry Schiavo Feeding Tube Removed

Original post by lullabella

I am so torn over this one. I feel for both her husband and her family. If she told her husband she would not want to live this way then why did he wait 8 years to petition for removal of her feeding tube? I just think it is a horrible way to die, this poor woman suffered so much.

This doesn't look like someone who's truly in a 'vegatitive state'

and, isn't there a LOT of evidence that the husband was abusive to her? In that case, I don't think the husband should be the decision maker

Why because her eyes are open?
What makes you say she does not look like she is in a vegatative state in this piocture.

How long have you guys been following this case. I find it HYSTERICAL that on a WEDDING website you are trying to downplay the sanctity of marriage and take away a spouse's LEGAL rights. The way it works in courts, if there is no living wil, the next closest gets to decide and it goes in this order
SPOUSE
Adult children
then parents

Terry has been diagnosed as being in a 'Persistent Vegetative State' which means
she has the absence of awareness.

I've been following this for quite some time.

Sanctity of marriage? He has a new family!

Because he has been having this battle for sooo long! It's not like she went into this state and he got married a week later. This happened to her in 1990, its been 15 years.
he has a right to get on with his life.

I agree with that. But the thing is he should also hand over the control to her parents.

I have heard a lot of people say this, but I have never seen this in articles that I read. Can someone site a source for me?
I am not trying to be sarcastic, I am just trying to be knoweldegeable from all sides.

check out the 'videos of terri' on her site

IMO...it is more cruel to keep her like she is then to let her go...

The parents are being selfish now...what happens to her when they die???
WHat happens when ther eis nobody to take care of her anymore...

It is time to let her go

Dates in Terri Schiavo Right - To - Die Case
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: March 18, 2005

Here is the timeline in the case of Terri Schiavo, who has been at the center of a protracted legal battle between her husband and parents over the husband's attempts to remove her feeding tube:

-- Feb. 25, 1990: Terri Schiavo collapses in her home from possible potassium imbalance, temporarily stopping her heart and cutting off oxygen to her brain.

-- November 1992: Schiavo's husband, Michael, wins more than $1 million in malpractice suit.

-- July 29, 1993: Upset over Terri Schiavo's care and the lawsuit money, her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, try to have Michael removed as Terri's guardian. The case is later dismissed.

-- Feb. 11, 2000: Circuit Judge George W. Greer approves Michael Schiavo's request to have Terri's feeding tube removed.

-- April 2001: State and U.S. supreme courts refuse to intervene, and Terri Schiavo's tube is removed, but another judge orders it reinserted two days later.

-- Feb. 13, 2002: Mediation attempts fail, and Michael Schiavo again seeks permission to remove feeding tube.

-- Nov. 22: After hearing medical testimony, Judge Greer finds no evidence that Terri Schiavo has any hope of recovery and again orders tube removed.

-- Oct. 15, 2003: Tube removed for second time.

-- Oct. 21: Gov. Jeb Bush signs hastily passed bill allowing him to intervene, then orders tube reinserted.

-- Dec. 2: Independent guardian finds ``no reasonable medical hope'' that Schiavo will improve.

-- Sept. 23, 2004: Florida Supreme Court strikes down ``Terri's Law'' as unconstitutional.

-- Feb. 25, 2005: After declining to give the Schindlers more time to pursue other legal and medical options, Judge Greer gives permission for tube removal at 1 p.m. March 18.

-- March 16: U.S. House passes a bill aimed at keeping Terri alive.

-- March 17: Florida House passes a bill intended to keep Terri alive; U.S. Senate passes bill different from U.S. House version.

-- March 18: Congressional Republicans try to put off tube removal by seeking her appearance at hearings, but Greer rules the tube must be removed.

Also...if doctors thought she would have ANY quality of life do you think they would go along with this decision

There is no evidence of abuse.
There is no evidence that she will 'snap out of it' or even remotely come close to being anything that she was

THINK ABOUT THIS...would YOU want to be her???

Would you want your life to be like hers???

I WOULD NOT..and even if my husband beat me..i would want to die than live the life that she is!

And if any of you have ever worked with traumatic brain injured people you would think the same@!

Not because her eyes are open, but because she responds to her mother, doctors, and other stimuli such as music.

The videos are better representations of her state of being than photos.

He CAN get on with HIS life while leaving HER to her parents.. I don't understand this at all...

I have not seen any articles that mention abuse on the part of her husband. I think that he certainly has the right to get on with his life after 15 yrs. I know that I would want my DH to do so. I can only say that I would not want to live under these circumstances. I would like to just be released of this life and also release my friends and family of their obligation to care for me. I would hate if my family sacrificed the rest of their lives to care for me.

SUE...really is that what you would want for your life?
responding to music..?

I dont' care how alert she is
I KNOW what it is like to deal with TBI patients...it si HORRIBLE and those are people who are 10000 times better than this woman...

TO all the people that think she should be kept on the tube...
answer this:

WHO IS GOING TO TAKE CARE OF HER WHEN HER PARENTS ARE GONE?

Her siblings? ..That is not a life for anyone!

I don't know. Maybe he did love her and wants to protect her wishes.

Who are we to say her life is not worth living? It looks to me like she has some type of brain activity.. If she is breathing and she has brain activity then she is alive. I don't think we as a society have a right to end her life.

No, that's not what I would want for myself.

But, it concerns me to leave someone's life in the hands of a person who has already started a new life, may very well have abused this person, and there are 2 people who are trying desperately to save their daughter.

I don't understand why the husband wouldn't allow for rehabilitation over the past several years. And, while she isn't functioning to the same capacity that she once did, she is responsive to stimuli around her. IMO, her life should be preserved as best as possible.

But, she isn't the only person in this predicament. What should we do with all of the other people who will need care after their parents are gone?

Just because there is no one to take care of her doesn't mean she should die. There are plenty of orphans out there with no one to take care of them, should we kill them? Or all the animals in shelters that we kill because there is no one to take care of them... is that right?

This is such an unfortunate situation and it breaks my heart to see her pictures but although it may not seem right to have her die through the tube removal, I do think legally as her spouse her husband is entitled to have final say.

Re: Terry Schiavo Feeding Tube Removed

But sue...in the end...she is like this...she isn't going to get much better if that.

I know i for one would not want to live my life like that...

and the truth be known, although the family is well intentions and maybe the husband isn't....it is time for her to go...

IMO it is CRUEL to keep her the way she is...AND she isn't going to get much better...THIS IS A FACT

I work with TBI patients and it is a sad sad life...and that is someone who is BETTER off than this woman

SO i guess i don't care what the persons motives are..who is making the decision...she has NO real quality of life now...she never will

AND i don't think any of you would want to switch places with her!

I think if we were in her shoes we would want to be let go and EVERYONE move on with their lives!

Re: Terry Schiavo Feeding Tube Removed

I jsut think that her husband has NOT WAIVERED one bit about what he said HER wishes were. I would think that if these were not her wishes, then he would have taken the one million dollars he was offered to stop pushing the issue.
last point, he is not re-married.

you are joking right

You cannot compare the situation...I KNOW what she is in for...I KNOW the florida system...They have VERY BAD institiutions...where SHE WOULD be placed when her parents pass on...
If i were a cat in a pound i would rather DIE!
