I am so torn over this one. I feel for both her husband and her family. If she told her husband she would not want to live this way then why did he wait 8 years to petition for removal of her feeding tube? I just think it is a horrible way to die, this poor woman suffered so much.

I can't help feeling that this is not right???? She isn't dying of natural causes, you know? I think if her parents want to care for her then they should be allowed too.
But if left to let nature take its course, the tube would never have been inserted, and she would have died immediately. We play G o d to keep her alive, but yet it is different when it is a matter of letting her die? Humans interfered to the extent that they did to keep her alive. And the husband has been trying for 8 years to have the tube removed, as soon as her doctors said it was a lost cost. It has been in and out of the courts ever since. It's not like this case just started--it's been in the news on and off for over 5 years.
I understand what you are saying. I just think that you can't undue what has already been done. Removing a feeding tube isnt like turning off a respirator, it will take her 2 weeks to die... all the while starving to death. It is not right.
I don't know. It's such a heated issue, but I do believe it should be the spouse who has final say, and I do not think the President should get involved with such a personal decision. It is awful that it will take 2 weeks to die, but I can't say that I think her quality of life now is such that it is worth living. JMO.

But shouldn't we do all we can to preserve life?
No. I don't think we should force people to undergo chemo or other medical treatments just because such treatments exist. I do not think the law should interfere to force someone to live a life IMO not worth living.

How long have you guys been following this case. I find it HYSTERICAL that on a WEDDING website you are trying to downplay the sanctity of marriage and take away a spouse's LEGAL rights. The way it works in courts, if there is no living wil, the next closest gets to decide and it goes in this order SPOUSE Adult children then parents
Terry has been diagnosed as being in a 'Persistent Vegetative State' which means she has the absence of awareness.
How have the parents been able to stop the will of the husband? He should be able to make the ultimate decision.

This did prompt DH and I to talk about what we would want G-dforbid it ever happened. How do you go about getting a living will - same way as a regular one?

PREPARE a LIVING WILL! This is why.
I cannot emphasize this enough. Make your wishes known to your family and friends so there is no argument over what you wanted!!!! Your never to young to make a health care proxy.
P.S. Living wills are not recognized in NY make a health care proxy and put someone trustworthy in charge.

Because he said she verbally said she would not want to live in a permanent vegetative state but there was not a living will to prove that. They say she would not have said that, and the Republicans in the Senate along with the Republican President do not want to be the ones to allow the tube to be pulled.

All I know is - I wouldn't want to live thiat way. If my parents kept me alive I would be upset. To me it seems selfish - this woman has no chance for a normal healthy life.
I recently went through a similar (although different) experience with a family member who decided to take herself off dialysis - knowing that she would die from that in order to stop her suffering from cancer. Losing her was the last thing we all wanted - it was very very painful for everyone - but even though her loved ones were around her - she had no quality of life.
eta: I think - in my opinion - the husband has a right to move on, if she is alive or not.

Because he has been having this battle for sooo long! It's not like she went into this state and he got married a week later. This happened to her in 1990, its been 15 years. he has a right to get on with his life.

As a parent, I feel very torn. I wouldn't want my child to live that way, day in and day out. I think it's their own selfish reasons that are driving them to keep her here. No one would want to ever let go of their child. On the other hand, I would not want them to suffer death in such a terrible fashion. Even plants have the basic instinct to know when they are lacking nutrition. I'm very torn and just wish God would intervene in this case.
Living will people...don't leave your life and death decisions up to someones perception of your final wishes.

Re: Terry Schiavo Feeding Tube Removed
would you all not trust your husbands in the same situation? Why wouldnt she have trusted hers?
The way I see it is - she can either die a painful death, and go somewhere better, or live a painful life for years and years.
And what happens if she is kept alive and then her parents pass away - who is looking out for her then?
There are so many issues - no wrong or right - its complicated. It's a shame.

Well, this has been going on for 15 years, so apparently the Democratic president who was in office for 8 years didn't want to remove it either.

I didn't think any president had had a say in it. and I think he's only been fighting for them to allow her to die for 8 years. Jeb Bush stepped in last time.
And, last I think the last update was they HAD removed the tube today because the judge ruled they shouldn't be blocking it.

It just went to the Senate and President this last appeal.

This doesn't look like someone who's truly in a 'vegatitive state'
and, isn't there a LOT of evidence that the husband was abusive to her? In that case, I don't think the husband should be the decision maker

I have heard a lot of people say this, but I have never seen this in articles that I read. Can someone site a source for me? I am not trying to be sarcastic, I am just trying to be knoweldegeable from all sides.
